Question for Comic Creators

Quick question for people "in the know" regarding the comic book art creation process:

I am looking at purchasing a page of original comic book art and have been informed there is a "small white paste-up" over a word balloon in the second panel of the page. Is this commonly done to cover up errors on the original page before going to printing? I have seen a scan of it and the "paste-up" resembles a small piece of white tape cut to cover the word balloon. Is this normal? Abnormal?

Very normal, and you've nailed it on the head as to exactly what the paste-up is and what they're for. I wouldn't think it would depreciate the value of the page much, if at all - such things are common on original art. Whiteout, pasted-over panels or word balloons, all kindsa stuff like that. What's the page/artist, just out of curiosity? (if you don't feel comfortable saying, I understand, just nosy)

I would go so far as to say that's what makes original comics art so cool. I have an Evan Dorkin page that has paste-up and erased pencil all over it. Seeing all that stuff is much better than getting something pristine and lifeless.

Sorry I am so late in answering your question Hunter... I recently purchased a page by Cameron Stewart (Catwoman Secret Files - Slam Bradley Pg01) and am also looking at a Gotham Adventures page, but have not finalized that one yet.

I also agree that erased pencils and the like are part of what makes owning original art so great. Such things really make the original stand out from the final printed art.
