ANyone hear more about this?

Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski told fans on a message board that he's working on a follow-up to the popular SF series, according to a report on the Dark Horizons Web site. Straczynski remained coy about the project, saying only that he'd have more news next month.

"On the B5 front, there has been something of rather substantial proportion that's finally gone from talk to money, such that I'm now working frantically to meet some deadlines," Straczynski posted. "But there's nothing I can say about this until after January 15th, probably closer to the end of that month."

Straczynski added, "The only thing I can say is that phase one of the new project is a go, hence the furious writing schedule at this end of things, which is why I've been silent until deciding to kick up some dust on the political discussion. I've been writing my little brains out. I wouldn't go on about something in this way if it wasn't a significant development."

I'm sure this is a bad idea. JMS was losing it badly in season 5 (not all his fault) but River of Souls was the worst shit ever. The new Rangers movie I heard was no better. Leave it alone, it was one of the best TV shows ever but it's done. Can we have Jeremiah on DVD instead? It looked interesting and I'd love to see it in the right order. (curse you Sky!)
Saying all that I'd love to be proved wrong.

Barb 5?

Is the Barbelith Project the last great hope for peace?

Barb5..what happens when my fingers type faster than my mind reacts.

Well I think the reason the other projects sucked so much is that they never really got a chance to see their full potential.

Barb5 Excalibur or Camelot or whatever it was called could have used a while longer as it had some interesting characters (the technomage for example) and some characters that, given time, could have been killed off.
I cant recall River of Souls and havent seen the rangers movie (although its suckiness could be due to the fact that it was supposed to be a pilot)

I mean if we have to suffer through years of Trek crap I think we could all use a littke B5 to clense our palets

I always liked the idea of a Babylon 4 series (yes, thats right, Babylon 4, its not a typo) detailing the events of the first Shadow War and Babylon 4 being used as the base for the enemies of the shadows. The main drawback I see with this is that there probably shouldn't be any human characters in the story since the race was not discovered (or possibly even exist?) back then and also it would rely on Michael O'Hare being in the lead role (which will never happen).

So basically what I think would be a great series is undoable, unmarketable and lacks wide appeal.

I can dream....

there was a 3-part b5 comic called 'in valen's name' which covered part of the b4/valen story - but it wasn't that great (or it may be just that i disliked the art so much it coloured my response to the whole thing).

apparently next year will see the release of a b5 tv movies dvd boxed set (which might possibly be the only way i'll ever get to see the post crusade rangers pilot) and a crusade boxed set...

if you live in cleveland, ohio, i will.

anyway...i'm a nutty fan of B5, so this is exciting news...knowing JMS, it will probably be something we haven't really heard about, like that shitty Legend of the Rangers movie...a revival of Crusade would be ideal, since that story was pretty interesting, and kind of important to the whole history of the B5 plot...

Yeah, I want a Crusade reboot with the writing job prised from JMS's cold dead fingers, what I've seen of his comic work after B5 ('Rising Stars' and a few 'Spiderman's) suggests his ability to write dialogue has generally improved but I would prefer something along the lines of B5 s.1 and 2 with him doing key episodes and overseeing the arcs and other people writing individual episodes. It's nice to dream innit?

I must be one of the few people who thought B5 sucked. Sucked the gay right out of Liberace's ass.
And don't get me started on Andromeda or Stargate SG-1...

and that contributes to the thread how?

Id love to see a series that was just bunch of mini-series focusing on various people of Bab5

he recently posted something saying that it will take a few more weeks to be able to give details on it, but that it's still moving forward and looks like it will happen. he called "B5:TMoS" but didn't say what that meant...I think this is a movie, but it's quite possible it is mini-series. A SciFi Channel mini-series would be pretty killer. HOPEFULLY, it's not related to the horrendously bad Legend of the Rangers movie. Ugh.

Ah -- Here it is:

"It's taken longer than hoped for to be able to talk about this, because it's
taken longer than hoped for to go through all the machinations of the deal.
Depending on the nature of a given deal, it can take a few weeks to a couple,
three months to actually cut the deal and finalize the language in terms
everybody can agree with. We only literally finished the deal last week.
Writing on B5:TMoS is complete, and as soon as the powers that be sign off on
everything, it can be turned in and we can start moving. At that point, I can
say more about this.

Figure another couple of weeks.

jms "

has the legend of the rangers ever been released on vhs or dvd or even been broadcast on UK terrestrial tv?

Our Lady Has Left the Building

It was on the Sci-Fi channel a few weeks back and I watched it. As a pilot for a new series I thought it was quite good (but then, I thought Crusade, while not great, was decent enough that it should have been allowed to continue), I just thought it was slightly awkward how, knowing what we do about the end of Sheridan's life, there's this vastly powerful alien race out there which never get mentioned by Delenn or anyone else. Plus the design team seemed to be allowed to design Minbar ships and technology that looked nothing like what we saw in TOS. But apart from that, fun.

Rather than trying to get the franchise back on it's feet, after now three failed attempts, I'd quite like a series of novels to fill in the gaps in the story.

There are 3 trilogies of novels that touch on various parts of the intervening time.

Psi Corp Trilogy - Basically the life story of Bester

Centauri Prime Trilogy - About Londo post-Season 5, including the affair with the Sheridan's kid.

Technomage Trilogy - Galen stuff - touches on plot points about where Crusade was headed.

Rejoice!

The thrust of the news is this: straight-to-video BABYLON 5 adventures...involving B5 characters in an anthology format...should arrive late next year. Written and directed by JMS.

Nooooooooooooooooo! Look, I watched B5: Legends of the Rangers, just for that JMS should be denied access rights to B5 ever again.

I can't say I ever saw it (presumably it was straight to Video without being broadcast on terrestrial TV?) but a trailer for the new project is now available on YouTube.

I like the idea of this new project going straight to video, and video only - not DVD.

Calling it "Voices in the Dark" is really going to lay those Lord of the Rings comparisons to rest...

the trailer has been on the official site for a couple weeks.

I dunno... as a big nostalgic crazy obsessed B5 fan, I was looking forward to this (even though, yes, Legend of the Rangers sucked really hard), but it just looks and sounds kind of dated... in the wake of Battlestar, can a SF show really compete?

The trailer gives me a happy feeling. But then I never got around to watching Legend of the Rangers, so maybe I'm just a naive little pup in that regard.

I watched Legend of the Rangers for the first time a couple of days ago and it certainly lives down to its reputation. However, that project seemed designed to bring new attitude to the universe, and featured only one character from the series. This new project seems to be all about giving fans one last glimpse of the various characters, an approach that I think is much stronger. For me, the series was great because of Londo and G'Kar, the universe itself wasn't as interesting.

Also on second watch I'm liking the technomage prescence in the trailer - perhaps we'll finally get to find out what a bloody 'apocalypse box' is.

Could it be that this is a partial rewrite of elements of the proposed B5 theatrical movie?
