A year or so back, this topic proposed starting a Barbelith sub-site for reviews.

I know it's a bit late, but we've gone and done it. Barbelith Reviews. There's not much there - a few music reviews, one gig review and one book review - but it's a start.

I've been PMing some of the lurkers around here to see if they'd like to write something for it, and I'm going to carry on doing that - like I said elsewhere on the board recently, I think it's daft of us to be worrying about a lack of new blood on the board when there's a huge number of people who come here to read the threads regularly but never post to them. Hopefully, the reviews site will provide them with an easier, less threatening way into the Underground than expecting them to jump straight into the middle of an ongoing argument.

That doesn't mean that contributions from regular Lithers aren't equally welcome. We've also said that people with absolutely no relationship to the board are welcome to write pieces for it, although I doubt anyone will take us up on that offer. Hopefully, it'll get a few more people involved here, kick off some discussions that might not have happened without it and provide another means of advertising Barbelith. There's also the possibility that, if it works and enough people are interested in it, something similar could be done in place of the long-dead Webzine.

Anyone who's interested in writing something for the site can either PM me or Flowers, or email barbelithreviews@yahoo.co.uk . Any suggestions or comments are more than welcome. Thenk yew.

Whoops. Forgot to say who we is. Flowers, Riz, Not Me Again and myself. Solitaire Rose is lined up for keeping the Comics blog on-course. Paleface, fridgemagnet and net-ban-shee are on-hand for any future changes to the design and layout of the thing.

Whoah there. No you don't. Shameless and annoying as this undoubtedly is, I'm bumping the thread up again so that the whole thing doesn't go the way of the Webzine in the space of eight hours.

Correct link?

(Sorry, can't really volunteer for reviewing unless I suddenly find myself with quite a bit more time on my hands...)

Both links work, but Blogger's having a flid today - can't get onto any blogspot sites. Wonderful timing.

Spaulding - cheers. I've replied to your other address.

Pingle - we're not expecting anyone to write for it on a regular basis. It's more a case of the subsite being there in case anybody ever wants to use it. Once, twice, whatever.

Example: every know and again I'll come across an album that I'd like to write something about, but feel that starting a thread here to do so would be a bit of a waste of space, simply because it's unlikely that there's a huge amount of actual discussion to be had from it. Hence the reviews site. So if you ever want to use it in future, it's there - give us a shout.

I'm starting a music review site of my very own soon, but I see no problem with me writing a few comix reviews for you. If you're interested.

Radiator> very much interested. What I've been saying to everyone else is to get in touch via PM or email when you've got something to stick up and we'll send you out invites to whichever blog/s you want to write for.

Maz> Outside is for everything and anything that doesn't involve sitting on your bum at home (or in the cinema). We've said "gigs, shows, plays, demonstrations" on the main page, but I'm sure that people can think of other things that could go in there. It might be the case that Outside's remit is a bit too wide, but we'll see.

I saw Beyond the Valley of the Dolls over the weekend. Would a review for that fit, even though I'm a virgin when it comes to Russ Meyers films?

Finally, something new!

I've meaning to start a new drive to try and persuade people to write stuff for the site.. surely I can't be alone in my ability to churn out a review of pretty much anything at the drop of a hat?

And, yeah, D-Mass, I think we're agreed that a review of just about anything is acceptable, providing it has an interesting take on the subject or, um, a reason to exist, as it were..

I give up man, can you slag Inseminoid?

Been meaning to get something together for you chaps to consider, by the way. But my time management is, to put it mildly, fucking atrocious. Will aim to do better. Er, starting from now.

I guess that depends on how you're planning to slag it, JD. I've not got a problem with negative reviews, providing that negativity is shown to have a good reason behind it - like Riz says, there's no real barrier to content here, but, speaking for myself, I'd like to see people writing intelligent criticism, rather than just telling us that something's shit and not backing it up.

Not that I think that's likely to happen, but it's probably worth mentioning. But yeah, otherwise all submissions welcomed with open arms.

Now that the DVD's out, can I rip the tits off the Legue of Ex. Gents film? I wrote a not-very-serious review of it earlier this year which I could re-hash without too much effort.

K, I'm done. How careful do we have to be about spoilers? I've tried to avoid anything that wasn't given away in the trailers, but maybe I should add a spoiler warning to be on the safe side.

Stick a spoiler warning in there if you're happiest doing that. I was thinking about putting some kind of general warning up on the film and comics blogs, but I might forget.

Although I'm always a little shocked by people who read online reviews without realising that, y'know, spoilers are sort of inevitable.

I'd like to request a David Boring review, please. I saw a call for comic requests on the main reviews site, and didn't know where to request - so here I am! I'm loving that comic right now (again), and I'd be interested to see a full look at the thing itself. I've never really seen anyone tackle it. It's a staggering bit of work.

Hopefully one day I will manage to write something for the site, but I find organising my thoughts in to coherent writing so immensely difficult I try to avoid it at ALL COSTS.

However, I am terribly nice, so I am certain something shall spring forth at some point. Just don't expect it to be particularly good.

Not really. Almost all the online reviews I read give the general premise of the story, reasons for trying or not trying the material, comparisons to other work, and any number of other things to tempt me or warn me without ruining the actual experience. They better, or I wouldn't read them. Or maybe I'm just lucky in avoiding all the reviews with spoilers.

What's the purpose of the reviews site? Is it for people to find work that they may like but haven't encountered yet, or is it for people who have experienced the subject under review and just want to see another opinion?

Also, I noticed that you've placed a breakdown of the Direct Market numbers on the comic review portion. So, is the site open for more then just reviews? I'm horrible at reviews, but fairly good at historical overviews.

I think it depends on your definition of what a spoiler is. Major storyline events from the halfway point of the work, any plot twists and the ultimate resolution of the story are all things that I'd consider to be spoilers, but other than those I think the term is massively overused. I'd expect a book review to contain some kind of plot synopsis, for example, but I've seen plenty of evidence to suggest that even that would get a lot of people up in arms.

I've been wanting to get a retrospective review written for the last couple of weeks, but (other than a lack of time) the main thing that's pulling me back is that I don't have any idea how I discuss the work in the context of everything that's followed on from it without passing comments on aspects of it without getting somebody het up about giving things away.

What's the purpose of the reviews site? Is it for people to find work that they may like but haven't encountered yet, or is it for people who have experienced the subject under review and just want to see another opinion?

A bit from column A, a bit from column B. That said, I'd peronally like to see a lot more from column A. If the idea was primarily just to provide another opinion, I don't think there'd be a huge amount of point to the site - that's an area that message boards have got covered.

Also, I noticed that you've placed a breakdown of the Direct Market numbers on the comic review portion. So, is the site open for more then just reviews? I'm horrible at reviews, but fairly good at historical overviews.

Sounds good to me - the idea of historical overviews would fit in well with the breadth of material that we were hoping the site would be able to provide.

Interesting. A 1000% increase in visits when the links promise pictures of bestiality and, er, dairyality over the visits through links to reviews.

There's a gap in the market there for anyone living in a country with lax obsenity laws.

Perhaps you could relaunch Barbelith Reviews as The Barbelith Sport, complete with lurid tabloid-style headlines? If you’re not happy with being a small circulation journal that only attracts the best readers, that is.

Actually, that’s quite a good idea: have you asked Haus to do a weekly football round-up? It’d be awfully good.

I just posted a review of the absolutely stunning new Oneida album.

Or, if you prefer, I cower before the tits of the plasticine death whore.

Nice Gorkys review by the way.

There's a comments feature on the site now, should anybody ever feel the need to use it.
