I'm spending more time in bars lately, and I'm bored with my very small repertoire of drink orders. Help me before I start making up drink names and angering the bartender =(

Long Vodka -- ice in the glass, splash of Angostura bitters, drain glass, shot of vodka, splash of lime cordial, tonic. Could be a bit tricky to find all the ingredients where you are ...

Mmm whiskey. Yes - sour mash mixes really well with coke. It also goes quite well as a shot in a point of guiness (but I'm sorry I have forgotten the name).

You can call this one "The Glycerine" (I'm only kidding)

1 part rum
1 part malt vineger
1 part vodka
1 part tomato juice

Garnish with cilantro, serve with ice.

I am drinking some rather nicely handcrafted homebrews. You should make\drink your own because there is nothing quite like drinking a beer that you have made.

just rum, drink it with whatever, coke or whatever. whatever you drink it with it produces a very "up" happy drunkeness. if anyone can reccomend a comparably happy drink, i'm listening. or whatever.

edited to confess that i drink bacardi, nothing sophisticated.

If you're old enough to legally drink in bars, you're too old to be trying different weirdo mixed drinks. You have to pick a drink and stick to it, it's gonna your drink. I like Jack Daniels.

Steelwelder -- I have twelve bottles of home made wine ready (as they'll ever be) for Christmas, ten of which are from next doors' grape vine. I have tested some already, it's not a great wine, but booze for practically nothing is not to be sniffed at (best to hold yr nose boom ching!). Making it is a very instructive process -- you learn so much about how the store-bought stuff is made and why it tastes the way it does. Plus you get to make your own labels, which is fun. I recommend having a go to anyone.

Oh Jack, where did you ever pick up such dated ideas? Its the 21st century, everybody should be constantly trying new things. Elseways lies stagnation. I like Jack(Daniels that is) for times when Im depressed and dont want to give a crap about anything.

Steelwelder: I soo agree about the homebrews. Ive been making beer and wine for about 10 years now. (Mostly wine though..still looking for a good beer.) I took a class in college called "The Chemistry of Winemaking". Since then Ive had at least one carbuoy on the go. Currently I have a Chianti, A rose and a white (cant recall the type for the rose and white). My house smells like a brewery and I LIKE IT. Last sept we tried our first from scratch wine made from the pears off our pear tree. Supprisingly it turned out tasting like a pear cider with all the bubbles of the best champagnes...Now the last bottle sits at the base of my winerack...one last soldier I dont want to part with...may kill it on New Years Eve though.

I still maintain that the Bloody Mary is the great signifier of how skilful a bartender is. Everyone thinks they can make one, but the quality varies dramatically. Certainly if you see them creating one with a pre-made mix, you should leave said establishment immediately. After finishing it, of course.

What’re you drinking in bars for anyway? What a waste of money. If I want to drink inside I’ll stay in the bloody house. If you’re going out, get a bottle and go to the park with the rest of the winos, and feed the pigeons. Thats what grown up drinkers do.

I’d like to know whether Jack Daniel only ever drinks Jack Denfelds.

Pardon my lack of(insert bigword meaning drink knowledge), but what is a whiskey sour? How is it different from a reh whiskey?

I haven't made any wine yet. My nephew just got done bottling a really nice crabapple liqueur. Mellow with a hint of bite.

I have learned a lot about why beers taste the way they do, and it has meade me even more of a beer snob. I have gotten to the point where I can usually tell you what sort of hops was used. I will still drink cheap American piss-water if it is the only thing available, but I prefer quality over quantity nowdays (unlike my college days when it didn't matter what I poured in my head, as long as there was a lot of it).

That pear wine sounds great Kegboy. I love making beers that are flavored with fruit that I have on hand. I have made a batch with cranberries that turned out pretty well. The reason I have not tried my hand at winemaking yet is my impatience. I can have a batch of ale ready to drink in as little as two weeks (depending on how long I let it sit after bottling).

The last batch my nephew and I made was very high alcohol content (something like 10%); we overcarbonated though, and it has to be ice cold to avoid losing most of the bottle when opened. I don't like to drink beer that cold, it takes away from the flavor.

I don't know if you have ever had one before Perfect Tommy, but a Red Needle is always good. Here is a very brief history of the drink and a half-arsed recipe.

Normally a beer drinker, I've been drinking wine & Coke lately, off the beer temporarily to prevent the winter getting me fat. Not something that I'd order at a bar though, I ask for Jack & Coke instead.

I'm mostly with Jack D, though. If you have a regular watering hole it's nice to have the bartenders know what you'll want the minute you walk in. "Hi ____, Pabst draft?" Last time I went to mine & asked for a Jack & Coke my favorite bartender scolded me for "throwing her off."

A friend of mine makes this one drink that I'm not entirely willing to try because it sorta grosses me out.

It's like two parts gin, one part Italian salad dressing.

Would this be good? Am I crazy?

Saint Keggers
19:41 / 01.12.03
Jonas: Try it...its not like its gonna kill you. Besides its just oil (most likely olive oil, and putting olives in drinks is not unheard of),water and some seasoning.

So basically you have part water, part bitters and part martini garnish with gin.

go for it.

If you survive report back.

Almost all kinds of Italian dressing have vinegar in it, Kegboy. That's crucial!

I don't know. I wouldn't want the drink that Jonas is talking about, but Kegboy is probably right about it being like a kicked-up martini.

...with a hint of vermouth stuck to the ice...I think I would drink it

A rocking drink, and very simple...tequila and tabasco. I can drink them all night, or until I begin hallucinating that I am.

Actually, I like to tease myself that I drink healthy, so I drink gin and tonics in the club to avoid malaria from the wildlife, Jagermeister for the digestion and the spicy Bloody Caesers for circulation.

because I was recently told to Sit Down! and was then threatened with various forms of pain inducement if I didnt comply, I've decided to play it safe and drink until either
A) I cant stand up anymore
or
B) I cant feel the pain.

Either way Im debating the merits of using this thread as a to do list.

Oooooooooooh! Spicy bloody marys! Tabasco has a new sauce out that is chipotle flavored. I can't wait to try that in a bloody mary. It is quite good mixed with a pepper vodka.

Mmmm...yes..they are soooo yummy.

You know Steelwelder, are you talking about the green Tabasco? It is actually very mild, but kinda tasty. I can drink the red one straight out of the bottle, so maybe I am not a good gauge for this.

Mmm...drinking hotsauce!

No, May, it is the chipotle sauce, and it is really good stuff. It has a nice smoky flavor to it. You are thinking of the green pepper sauce. The habanero sauce they make is pretty good, as well, even though it is a bit mild at 8,000 scovilles.
