Kazaa question

I now have access to broadband, and want to download Kazaa - I've heard it mentioned here that Kazaa is full of spyware, and KazaaLite is the one you want. However, I couldn't find Kazaa Lite at Kazaa.com, but doing a google brought up a site called K-Lite. My quesion is, is the second site legit - anyone else here use it? Is it safe to download and better than Kazaa? And also why is such a similar product being run by two different compniess? Anyone know?

Any advice on downloading and using the damn thing gratfully received.

Just been and read theold "Broadband" thread, and actually anything will do that's good for downloads. Also, if these things download lots of spyware, howdo you get rid of it? I've got the free AdAware thing, is this enough? Any other tips?

Please help someone PC illierate.

KaZaaLite is a spyware free version of KaZaa. You can get KaZaaLite by following this link. AdAware is a really good bit of software, I run it on my personal machine nearly every day. Another good music DLing program is SoulSeek, you can get it right here. SoulSeek has returned at least a few hits on nearly everything I have searched for, no matter how obscure. I use KaZaaLite for movies and software, but not music anymore.

There are two payware free versions of Kazaa, Kazaa Lite and Diet Kazaa. Of the two I found that DietK has received better reviews. However if you are interested in sharing as well as downloading then your better bet would be to go to DC++. It is widely considered to be the best mechanism for sharing types.

DC is the best for getting movies and software, certainly.

Kazaa Lite is fine, but is not "legit" - it's not sanctioned by the makers of Kazaa, who want you to use their spyware, popup client. Thus you will not find it on their site. It's a hacked version. You should certainly not use full-fat Kazaa.

not nervous

so you have to pay to use soulseek?

SoulSeek is free. There is an option where you can pay and be automatically moved to the top of any download queue you happen to be in, but the software and service is free. Here is their page.

For penguins and Mac huggers, I find gtk-gnutella is the best. It connects to all Gnutella-based networks, Morpheus, Limewire, Acquisition etc etc, it's massively configurable, and it's free. (Mac people can get it through Fink.)

KazaaLite: easiest to use.

http://www.kazaalite.tk/

**************

DC++: biggest selection and variety of files, also fastest.

For Windows: http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/

For Mac: http://www.neo-modus.com/

Search through the list of "public hubs", get acquainted to them, then learn to use the DC++-program itself.

**************

Soulseek: specialized for music, larger selection than Kazaa.

http://www.slsknet.org

**************

BitTorrent: the really fast one!

http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/

A new level of decentralization in file-sharing, since users can start downloading files from each others even while the files are not yet completed, making this somewhat tricky-to-use program the fastest in downloading.

No no no! Don't do Kazaa! It's crap, and it's full of spyware, and it's the P2P crawling with RIAA goons.

Go to Soulseek. It has the best selection, the coolest people using it, no spyware/virus junk to worry about, and it's far under the RIAA radar at the moment.

I highly recommend paying the $5 donation to get the 35 days of priveleged membership on Soulseek, by the way. I've been doing that for a while now, and it really helps.

Soulseek isn't totally perfect, by the way. The selection is pretty amazing, but there's still lots of very obscure things that I can't find very easily, but I've got weird tastes. For example, all of my attempts at getting Bulgarian folk music over the past few days has been met with frustration. Still, that's probably not what you're looking for.

Soulseek is great with leaked albums. Lots of record reviewers/music writers use the service.

It's a major system resource hog, so you can't use it all the time or it will drag yr computer to a grinding halt.

Kazaa lite is my "movie-stealer" of choice. Yeah, I didn't find it the first time I Googled... not sure how I ended up finding the right link.

Soulseek seems wicked for music- although to be honest I've only looked for Current 93/Nurse With Wound-type stuff, but it's always come up trumps so far.

What's your idea, Illmatic? I'll put you on my list.

I'm "Perpetua" over there.

ZeroPaid.com for all your file sharing needs.

I prefer Ares for music and Shareaza for books and handling torrent files. Shareaza has a bigger selection, but Ares is faster.

Whenever possible I use Usenet (newsgroups). Check out the tutorials section if you're new to usenet.

Cheers Flux, my id will be dannyl over there. Still figuring out how to use it actually, My Norton Anti Virus keeps on flasing up a pop up box to prevent Soulseek from accessing the net which is proving very annoying. ANyone got any ideas how to deal with this - ta.

Turn Norton off- in my experience, it's a pain in the ass and none too handy about handling viruses. Use AVG instead- so far that seems to be doing the trick for me. (And, again, it's free.)

Note: When you're running Kazaa, it'll start a program called 'P2P Networking', which isn't needed and uses your bandwith without you realising it. Go to Task Manager and shut it down. (Another reason why I hate Kazaa: 'P2P Netorking' will keep running even after you've closed Kazaa...

I just got DC++ working today, and it rocks! No spyware and the rest.. it took a while to get the hang of it, but it has a lot of software and movies, even if some hubs won't let you on if you're not Hungarian...

Well, I'm enjoying the ol Soulseek, haven't downloaded that much so far but part of that is the paralysis of too much choice.
