I saw two paintings by this artist in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris when I was 15. One was a self-portrait (if I recall correctly, it was in profile, and he had dark hair and a thin, haunted face - the English translation of the title was, simply, 'Self Portrait'), and one was a dark, understated picture of Christ in his tomb (called something descriptive like 'Christ in his tomb'). I really loved them both, but I can't for the life of me remember the artist's name. I think his surname began with 'H' (it's not Holbein. I think this bloke was around in the 19th or possibly early 20th century), but it might not've. Useful, huh?
Does anyone have the faintest clue who I'm talking about? |
