Have a read.

I only just found out about this. I was shocked by this story, despite knowing that there are bound to be many stories we'll never know about from that war. How many stories are we missing out on from the current incursions by US forces in various parts of the world? Clearly Iraq is a different case by far. The rank and file stationed there now is relatively more professional than the draftees that served in the 60s and 70s. The situation is less drastic, also. Though how long will this last? How much hasn't been told already? Thoughts?

Well, yeah.. If there's one thought that helps make the whole Iraq/Afghanistan situation slightly less cataclysmicly depressing, it's that Vietnam was even more fucked up, happened with even less of a supposed reason and had been going on for years before a substantial opposition movement developed at home..

Aside from that though, I suppose it almost goes without saying that all manner of messed up stuff is probably happening in Iraq without our knowledge. That's the way 'wars' work. We'll proably find out all the shocking details in 20 years or whatever.
(And the fact that the occupying force doesn't seem all that bothered about publicly breaking human rights guidelines and brutalising journalists doesn't bode well for what they might be getting up to when the cameras are turned off..)

The war crimes stories always come out in dribs and drabs over the decades. Remember the story about the alleged (and heavily disputed) nerve gas attack on US deserters in Vietnam (or was it Laos)?

And wasn't it just a few years ago (98/99) that revelations came out about US war crimes in Korea? About how US troops machine-gunned a bunch of refugees and blew up a bridge other refugees were trying to cross?

I'm sure our grandchildren will be digging up horror stories about Iraq one day...
