"The Old Operating Theatre Museum is proud to host
SALON 2003

An annual meeting-of-the-minds celebrating dissonant visions and radical thinkers. Curated by cult author Jack Sargeant, in collaboration with Simon Kane, founder of Salon 2002.

Thursday 4th December, 7.30 pm
Jake Chapman in conversation with Cosey Fanni Tutti.
Jake Chapman is, with his brother Dinos, a key figure in contemporary British art, and their works have been included in Sensation and Apocalypse at the Royal Academy. Jake Chapman is the author of the recently published Meatphysics (Creation Press) a work which "represents a schizo-analytical assault upon the hyperconscious idiocy of libertarian humanism. Meatphysics is a delirious mix of theory and fiction". The Chapman brothers have been nominated for the Turner Prize 2003.
Cosey Fanni Tutti, was a founding member of performance group Coum Transmissions, industrial music pioneers Throbbing Gristle, and CTI. A visual artist and performer, she has recently co-founded Carter Tutti with long time collaborator Chris Carter.

Okay, me and BiP are meeting a t Leicsester Sq at about 5ish to nip into Soho for a quick bite to eat. I suggest just on the other side of the barriers, coming off the Jubille Line. At least that's what I think I said when I drunkenly PMed her last night. The old operating theatre is at London Bridge, just find Borough High Street, walk down and St Thomas Street is first left, I think, The OOP is about 30 yards down, map here, I suggest we meet outside at 7.00? Good for everyone? PM me if you fancy hooking up beforehand, The George at London Bridge might be good for a quick pint before, and defintely for several after, if any non-attendees fancy a Thursday night drink.

Call me one of the 7 o'clockers (well, for this night only- it's a bit of a shit nickname under normal circumstances)... I have to work afterwards, y'see, so I'll be attempting to get to bed by 10 tomorrow morning, and 6 is about as early as I can get up.

Whoah. Cosey fucking rules!!! (and the Cosey-inspired-ness of assembled 'lithers will give me a chance to convince people that they MUST come to RE:TG next year.)

Yay! I'm currently sat here exhausted waiting for the chippie to open so I can get some supper and go to bed in preparation for an early yet cool evening's entertainment! Seeyaz at 7!

(btw... couldn't get the map link to work, but if anyone else is having the same problem it's easy enough to Google for... didn't get half as many weird surgical fetish sites as I'd expected... probably lucky, cos I was at work!)

That was mental. Cosey was very cool- very down to earth in a sea of "arty" people, saying just as much as her interlocutor and most of the questioners, but talking like a real person. Very much how she comes across in interviews, actually. (Although saying she'd never expected anyone to read anything dodgy into the cover of DOA was a little TOO ingenuous for my liking...)

And my God! That place is fucking mental!!!

I enjoyed this thoroughly. I really liked Cosey and was glad that Jake Chapman didn't turn up so we had more time to focus on her (I like his artwork, but he comes over as a dork). Cosey was very straightforward and down to Earth, kind of like your cool counter culture mum, I really admired the way she talked and brought some new insight her experiences - more later, maybe, still thinking about it.

What about afterward - did you give into what I shall now refer to as the infamous "Nolan effect"?

No.

I got the last train home. It wasn't even the last train, I was actually on the 11:15. In fact, you saw me going to the station..

However, my plan was flawed in the sense that the "Nolan Effect" arrived at my house in the early hours, and I ended up drinking till way after 3am anyway. Sometimes, it would seem, the Nolan Effect is inescapable whatever you do.

'Sometimes, it would seem, the Nolan Effect is inescapable whatever you do. '

Jesus...you try living with it!

Very enjoyable night...Cosys film and interview was really interesting although i'm still cringing about my 'What is the role of art?' question...Christ what a berk!

no, you didn't. but she was a republican straight queer woman, so there was a lot of confusion going round...

"What about afterward - did you give into what I shall now refer to as the infamous "Nolan effect"? "

The comedy timing of that conversation was brilliant.

Random republican straight queer woman: "If you kiss a man - then that means you're gay. There's no middle ground. However, I'm not gay, but I did have a girlfreind for 3 years."

Everybody else: "So how does that work?"

Random republican straight queer woman:"It's just different being with another girl. It's just nice, and there's no hassle or pressure"

Ghadis: "You should try having a dog. It's lovely. Just sits by the fire when you're watching The Bill. No bother at all."

Random republican straight queer woman wanders away from our table with concerned look on her face..
