So, another year and technology has moved on - have more people bought ipods now or other mp3 playing machines more your thing?

I'm toying with the idea of purchasing a Rio Karma 20Gb player, but the rash of negative user reviews is making me reconsider. Shame really, as I liked the stand with built-in RCA and network connections. Can anyone recommend something to me? Budget's in the region of $300, but if I end up with a lot of change I wouldn't mind.

GA: don't have any mp3 stuff myself, but I've been considering it, and the
Creative Zen
would be top of my list. *Apparently* (from what I've read) the battery life's better than the iPod. It doesn't look as pretty, but seems to do the same job. And you can transfer files via Explorer (on Windows, that is, not sure if it works with Mac/Linux/any other OS) as opposed to loading up some hunk of bloatware to transfer files. And...yeah, my flatmate has an iPod, he installed iTunes on my PC and it's an awful beast. It spawns two nasty memory-hogging threads in the background regardless of whether it's being used or not. So that's why I don't like iPods.

Apple just updated the iPod. Now it is a bit more like the iPod mini. For those of you seeking slightly cheaper iPods, now is the time to get the older model on clearance. Go monkey, go!

I've just joined the pod people and am loving the experience so far...

On an iPod related note someone above talks about how bloated iTunes is and that's a totally fair comment which is why I uninstalled it within minutes of realising that, while it might be something special in the Apple community, I've already got a good few apps which will organise my music collection, rips CD's for me, etc. No, what you want to install instead is the speedy, easy to use and bloatfree EphPod. Go on, you know it makes sense.

bllllasssttt, this mini-disc player is the baaane of my existence! if only I had waited uh, eight months or so until they came out with the cheaper ipods...with all the memory...now I'm stuck with this and nobodies buying on ebay and my friend was right that I should've gotten something that supports mp3s.....

Has anyone else noticed that the shuffle function on iPod isn't very satisfactory at throwing together a completely random collection of songs? The first 10 or so out are always very similar, on my machine at least. And it has a prediliction for artists beginning with L, M, N and O.

I've noticed that too, Sax. I put that down to my brain creating a sense of homogeny. Shall keep an eye on it, though.

I've noticed the same on my mini ipod...the shuffle function does seem to throw up the same songs on a very regular basis (although mine has a preference for S, B and D). It might be due to the distribution of titles on the player, but I've got a very mixed bag with only a few artists present more than three times, and it still manages to randomly pick the same songs. I remember old versions of Winamp doing the same due to the way the ramdomising algorithm was written, so maybe that's the cause?

So do you actually go to the length of generating many playlists, or do you just shuffle all the material on your player? I've got a couple of playlists to fit situations (most played being my 'Battle Music' list for walking in town during rush hour) but mostly shuffle everything.
