Regrettable Juvenilia

There are no spoilers in this post, because for now I'm mainly interested in persuading you to go see it. Fantastic performances from the four leads - Frances McDormand, Christian Bale, Kate Beckinsdale and Pollux Troy* - and a great evocation of a kind of stoned, rock-history-infused wealthy bohemian Los Angeles vibe, its pros and cons. Recommended particularly for fans of Six Feet Under (which is unsurprising given that the writer/director Lisa Cholodenko has directed at least one episode of that show - as well as 'Homicide: Life On The Street', so that's a pretty good TV pedigree). It has the same skill in presenting disfunctional families, disintergrating relationships, and characters who fuck up but remain sympathetic... It's a very non-judgmental film, I think. It also shares with 6FU the ability to mix deft comedy with spot-on emotional observation...

Anyway, I think lots of people here should go see it, and I'm going to talk about what I liked about it in more detail once some people post to say they have.

*Okay, okay, Alessando Nivollo (sp?) - look, he'll always be Pollux Troy to me - but anyway, his obnoxious but borderline charming British rock star is great, providing much of the best humour.

pointless and uncalled for

Fucking curses. I came here wih the intention of starting this thread, having been all clever and gone to see the film on Saterday. I had hoped to see this film at the LLGFF this year but unfortunately for me and many others the distributers caused some problems. Glad to see that it was out again I rushed in to see it instead of the intended In The Cut and am please to announce that I was not disappointed at all.

Lisa Cholodenko has managed to turn out another incredible piece of cinema to follow her debut film High Art, a masterpiece in it's own right. It carries one of the trademarks of a talented writer for me where I want to see what turns up next. Fortunately I only have to wait for next year when Cavedwellers is released.

I'm not going to get into spoiler area until more of you have seen this film, which you all should do. You will love it, I assure you.

Ooh ooh, Six Feet Under connection! I knew I wanted to see this film for a reason, and now I've got two thanks to you, Flyboy.

Frances McDormand is the other one, obviously. She can do no wrong.
