There are no spoilers in this post, because for now I'm mainly interested in persuading you to go see it. Fantastic performances from the four leads - Frances McDormand, Christian Bale, Kate Beckinsdale and Pollux Troy* - and a great evocation of a kind of stoned, rock-history-infused wealthy bohemian Los Angeles vibe, its pros and cons. Recommended particularly for fans of Six Feet Under (which is unsurprising given that the writer/director Lisa Cholodenko has directed at least one episode of that show - as well as 'Homicide: Life On The Street', so that's a pretty good TV pedigree). It has the same skill in presenting disfunctional families, disintergrating relationships, and characters who fuck up but remain sympathetic... It's a very non-judgmental film, I think. It also shares with 6FU the ability to mix deft comedy with spot-on emotional observation...
Anyway, I think lots of people here should go see it, and I'm going to talk about what I liked about it in more detail once some people post to say they have.
*Okay, okay, Alessando Nivollo (sp?) - look, he'll always be Pollux Troy to me - but anyway, his obnoxious but borderline charming British rock star is great, providing much of the best humour. |
