Hard-to-come-by Magic books

Recently I thought it would be a good idea to expand my occult library (at the moment I only have about 23 books dealing specifically with the occult). I saw that I only had one book on voodoo so I decided to get another one. So I went to Amazon to get Maya Deren's "The Divine Horsemen". To my disappointment, it was out of print. So I decided to buy someone else. I've been meaning to look into Kenneth Grant's work for awhile now, so I decided to get some of his books. I went back to Amazon, however, most of his books were out of print also. WTF?!?!

And of course I've been waiting FOREVER for that damn "Voudoun Gnostic Workbook" to get reprinted (once I saw it being sold "used" for like $580 bucks or something). Cripes!

Yeah, high on my list is the Pseudonomicon by Phil Hine.

The Return Of Rothkoid

The Deren's not out of print. With small variances in the title, it's been produced for years. I bought a new copy earlier in the year...

Deren's book is still very much in print, as are a fair number of Kenneth Grant's books. Try ordering from amazon UK.

I know someone not amillion miles away from this board who picked up Deren a week or two ago, new. There was an edition published under the name "The Voodoo Gods", maybe it's under that name in the States? A lot of Grant's books are going out of print slowly, The first 4, plus the new ones were republished by Skoob in England starting about 10 years ago, I guess with relatively small print runs so they're going out of print slowly. Shouldn't be that hard to get though. I can't see The Voodoo Gnostic Workbook every being reprinted as a) it's huge, must've cost a bomb the first time round and b) it's totally mad. If you want to stimulate the experience of reading it, just smoke some crack and Purple Haze and then try reading Kenneth Grant, Maya Deren, a book on candle magic and the phone book while running round the room backward screaming "aggggrrrrrhhh flibbertibibbergibbet Cthulhu arrrgh". That should do it.

I think there should be a barbelith magic forum project to tattoo the entire text of the Voudon Gnostic Workbook onto somebody. Perhaps this could be a project for this friday's meet? Can you think of anybody who might make a good canvas? I'm thinking either D list celebrities or disgraced politicians...

Best place to get magic books is a second hand book shop. Then it doesn't matter if they're out of print.

Does anyone else want a 'best magic books' thread? I really want to get a sense of the best books you lot rate, and the magical bibliography thread I started ages ago sank like a stone.

I totally agree about the experience of reading the Voudon Gnostic Workbook. The experience of buying it isn't so bad either...
I usually get my hard to find books at Ben Fernee's.
He regularly sends a list of books by email and there are really treasures in it.
His mail is :
ben@cadu.demon.co.uk
Ask him to be included in his mailing list. Last one was full of Spare, Grant and Crowley.
And Dagon Productions for those not so hard to find...

thanks for your time !

I've just channeled a message from Seth, and he says he's totally up for being the vehicle for this. It'llbe just like Doom Patrol. We'll have to wax him first though, can someone bring some candles and some Imac?

As it's a fat book (*and I am less hairy than his Sethness) I'll be part 2. As long as I get to read it first (and summon Loa by flexing my biceps)

My copy of the Maya Deren book was called "The Voodoo Gods," if that's any help. Fuck knows why. I guess it was an attempt to court a more populist market (while those who are actually interested in the book itself can't find the bloody thing. Really clever).

Actually, the Kenneth Grant book I really want is "Outside the Circles of Time" but it seems to be out of print everywhere and, when I can find it, usually goes for about $250. What a rip-off.

Steal a copy, man. Nobody in their right mind pays money like that for a book.

i would recommend Deleuze and Guattari's 'Thousand Plateaus'. pure magic. not usually considered 'occult' literature, but if you can get your head around it, it may be of more use in your magic than anything else mentioned here.

"Outside the Circles of Time" was only printed once, back in the late seventies and probably had a tiny print run even then, a 1000 or so, that's why it's so pricey. Starfire might re-publish it though, I suppose.

you're probably already aware of this if you've contacted starfire publishers, but in case anyone is interested this is from the company:

The nine volumes of Kenneth Grant's Typhonian Trilogies were originally issued over a period of 30 years, from 1972-2002. The first five were printed by Muller, London. Some were published/reprinted in the 90's by Skoob Publishing, London, and the last two, 'Beyond The Mauve Zone' and 'The Ninth Arch' were published by us. We will be reprinting all of the previous books, in revised and reset editions, and we will be starting with 'Outside The Circles Of Time' next year, as this is the only one that was never reprinted, and thus the most in demand. After that, we shall start from the beginning, and reprint the rest.

hashmal--'thousand plateaus' looks totally great, I'm going to go dig that up!

Hashmal: If you have the time or inclination, please start a thread on it, either here or in the Headshop. I've always been put off by Deleuze and Guttari - too imitating. Though I did meet someone once who had been reading 1000 Plateaus continously for 4 years, over and over!
