"Stare into a freshly cooked Pizza. Let your mind go blank and look for patterns and images in the filling. If you're reading for a friend, start with the past. Think back in time and look for images- it could be anything, such as a dog or a car. Once your friend reacts positively, allow the questioning to develop. Then move on to the present and the future."
(from the November 2003 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine)

The article goes on to detail how to read the future in a lampshade, contact your spiritual guides and ask the spirit world to get you the job you want.

So, is this commercial cashing in on new age gullibility? Or a valid modern divination technique?
Many people say you can divine using anything, and if you believe in psychic powers like Clairvoyance the method is irrelevant, it just channels the talent. On the other hand, Pizzamancy? What next, KFC-omancy? Car-Freshener-omancy?

The article goes on to describe the scrying technique used by Nostradamus (i.e. looking into a bowl of water in the dark) which is in theory perfectly valid, so what do you think?

Pizzamancy- wonder or blunder?

"Stare into a freshly cooked Pizza. get REAL close, so the steam hurts Let your mind go blank You're reading cosmo arnt you? and look for patterns and images in the filling Pizza has toppings, idiot, not fillings unless you're eating stuffed crust or dropped a tooth. If you're reading for a friend, start with the past. 'Cause the past is dead easy.."yesterday you will have worn a red sweater" Think back in time and look for images- it could be anything, such as a dog or a car. Or a red sweater? Once your friend reacts positively, hey wow! A blowjob! This is wonderous magick after all! allow the questioning to develop. and be sure to answer in either essay or multiple choice form Then move on to the present and the future." I can see we have a pizza in your present. If I strain the mystic fabric of space and time and credibility I can see that in the future it may or may not get cold. Unless it is eaten.

Poor Crowley..he never renewed his Cosmo subscript and look what happened to him....
Seriously though... if you got a gift doesnt matter what you use it should work.(I use a coffee mug..not that im claiming to have a gift or any talent whatsoever) If you dont have a gift you're just wasting time and money or just having a laugh.

How do you feel about tea leaves?

I guess my initial reaction to this is "wow, magick IS making an impact into contemporary PopCulture... Good". I can say this because I'm of the camp that believes magick is only a method for observation of self. Shit, Tarot cards don't do much else than force you to pick apart events one by one and get you to see things in a different way. If you want to believe pizza is gonna tell you the future, fine. But the fact is, magick like that is glossalalia. It's gonna be your subconscious desires manifesting in your imagination.

I say we mainstream pizzamancy! Provided we ALL understand the nature of glossalalia.

Does it matter what type of pizza? And what actually defines a pizza? Is that pizzone thing that Pizza Slut has (that's just a rp off of what some people have been doing anyway) count as a pizza? Or the free bread sticks that are sent with your pizza? Does it have to be fresh pizza? What if it's cold? Or it's been sitting out for a week and a civilization of penicillin has conquered it? Do frozen pizzas count? How about homemade? What if you buy the pizza and then realize you got the wrong one? How does that effect your reading?

And Q, what the Hell were you reading Cosmo for anyway?

*hastily* My g/f ripped the page out to show me because it was so funny, I only ever read the problem pages and sex quiz in Cosmo waiting at the dentists, I swear..

*holds hands to temples* "I see... I see.. I see Pepperoni in your future.."

Gotta disagree there, if you get the Devil, the Tower and Ruin (10 swords) coming up then it's difficult to make that 'you'll get a better job', y'know?
I agree there is a lot of 'Rorshasch' effect in divination, and a lot of cold reading (which is what Cosmo describes) but it's not just that.
I'm a Tarot reader, and I don't subscribe to the 'Gift' theory, it's a skill you develop that anyone can learn. I think it can act as a psychological mirror (as Chesed describes) but that above and beyond that there is magic involved in the cards themselves, I've seen too many accurate readings to believe in coincidence.
I once read for a guy I didn't know, who told me nothing, and divined he was an Amnesiac. Is that just re-examining stuff?

I'm not going to try Pizzamancy anytime soon, but I'm glad that this stuff is out there in the mainstream- I'd rather magic were ridiculed than feared.

Pizzamancy is great stuff, its the only way of divination that wont leave you hugry... I guess it would work better if yoy do thge pizza youreself and why not write some runes on the mushrooms before you throw them on...

i think it's interesting that Cosmo would even write about the pizza trick... like chesed says, it really does mirror that there is a substantial awareness/interest in occultism/metaphysics at this point. guess the age of horus truly is rolling in...

I also believe that ANYTHING can be used for divination/meditation.
I do think Pizza is an odd choice, since it does represent fast food which I'm trying to stay away from. ( I do know that there are high quality pizzas to be found at authentic italian hideaways).

I doubt too many cosmo readers will start engaging in pazzamancy now, as someone else suggested, cosmo rather serves to "relax" and "go blank".

I'm hungry now....I'mgonna go skrying with a vegan lunch from the hare krshna temple down the street....
