Don't you mean Shambala? Mythic city of golden pagodas, fountain of eternal youth and wizened old Tibetans controlling the world in the Himalayas? I wondered if these sort of stories had their origins in stories about the first trips by Westerners into Tibet.

Shambhala is also a Tibetan tradition created by the founder of the university I go to, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Personally I'm not a fan of it as its very New Agey and caters to rich Westerners. But it is very much based on Suhkavati/ Pure Land/ "enlightened society" Buddhism.

There's a town called Bala in Wales I went to a free festy there 1991.
I've got 2 of the American Shamballah books - one on Zen and the other on Kundalini. Makes me want to razor all me hair off and run off to the countryside to my rural retreat and meditate on the social interactions of the local wildlife - as if!!!!
