Pixar Superheros

My son just got the "Finding Nemo" DVD for his birthday and the second disc has something on it I found very interesting. The next Pixar project is called "The Incredibles". From the scant info in the trailer, it appears to be about a golden age hero who is called back into service, but isn't in any shape to go into action. It does look like they'll be playing it mostly for the comedy, but all Pixar films have a serious undercurrent too. With any luck they've got some comic geeks working on it and it'll be full of in jokes. I realize it'll be a kids movie, but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll just be for kids.

The Incredibles is going to be directed by Brad Bird. His Iron Giant was the greatest movie about superheroes ever made. He even wanted to do a movie about The Spirit. So, yeah, I think it's in good hands.

I just wish The Incredibles was in 2-D, because the pre-production sketches are fantastic.

Fuckin' Iron Giant had me weeping like a child who's pet has died.

(And I know from recent trauma what that's like)

I haven't seen the production stuff, but the animation is fairly standard Pixar. Woulda been cool if they'd 3-D'd golden age style comics. Or maybe not.

It's their best human design to date, light years beyond the tepid humans in their first four films. I flipped through the Nemo design book a while back and there's a page of designs for the Dentist's Office characters and you can see that they're finally loosening up, design-wise, and doing a lot more funny looking people. There's a brief interview with Lasseter on the Nemo disc and he talks about how the most important thing on any project is research, so I have no doubt that Bird and Co. have spent many a long day and night reading comics, comics, and, oh yes, more comics. This film will be a fantastic last hurrah for Super-Hero movies for a while, before Hollywood chews up the trend and spits it out.

THE INCREDIBLES looks amazing. And I agree that Brad Bird is amazing and THE IRON GIANT made me cry -- with joy -- too. I bought it immediately for my little cousin and he grooved on it big-time.

Here are a few screenshots, including a few of the preproduction sketches I mentioned earlier.

Has anyone else seen Family Dog? Not the early 90's series, but the one-off that appeared on Amazing Stories from the mid-80s? That was done by Brad Bird, with character designs by Tim Burton. It's probably the best animated half-hour produced for network television. My VHS copy of it disintegrated, but my teacher had a copy and we watched it in class. Highly recommended. I'm bringing it up because the Incredibles mom reminds me of the Mom from Family Dog.
