You can read a bit more here, and I'm pretty sure it's been brought up once or twice more somewhere.

I'm psyched for this! Let's put the reviews/comments of TALES OF THE VAMPIRES on this thread when it comes out (yah Cam!), unless moderators decide otherwise. The preview pages look great!

TALES OF THE VAMPIRES #1, with Cameron Stewart drawing a Joss Whedon-written vamp story, just came out yesterday and I freaking didn't see it at the store!!! I'm pissed. But I will get it very soon, very soon ---

so who did get it?? Thoughts? It got good reviews from the folks at www.thefourthrail.com, which usually features intelligent, well-written reviews with pretty decent taste.

I didn't even see this thread the first time around, sorry.

Well, it's out now. I flipped through a copy in the shop the other day and while I was initially taken aback at how....intense the colours were when printed, I got over the surprise and am actually quite pleased with this little story. Anyone that's read it pelase let me know what you think.

Next up: SEAGUY!

Picked it up cause of Joss Whedon and I heard you were drawing a story Cam. I've never seen your work before and was interested to see it so I can see what Seaguy will look like...

WOW!

Great stuff man. Story was fantastic too.
P.S. Any idea when Seaguy will be out? And do you guys have plans on making multiple mini-seires with Seaguy?

I read my girlfriend's copy of this on the can, and, yeah, Cameron's story is this great little Enid-from-Ghost World-meets-Buffyverse spin. Neat.

I picked this up today, and was really impressed with the Joss/Cameron tale. The rest of the book was a little lacking for me (I liked some of the ideas - the narratives in the spike story fr'example - but I felt some of the design/art let me down a little. The cover? Ehhh, didn't do anything for me). I really thought that last short tale was the only one that really "popped". But then, I guess that's all I was really interested in, too.

Cameron: you seem to have an uncanny ability to draw people who look exactly like people I know but can't quite place! Also - that is the coolest, most rock and roll vampire! Seriously, I would have liked to see more of him. In fact, I kinda wish this story had been longer - even if not in story, in page count. Even though I do like the way it's all condensed and compact. My favourite section of the story has to be where she first sees the vamp, and when she gets bitten - and the little fade way. I really like how that's done. And also - the girl's just so cute! This story shows Joss to really have an excellent grasp of comic scrip writing as well, and really plays up to the medium. Which is nice (I'd never read anything by him...). So, I'm impressed all round really. Although in all honesty, it's just annoying that you had to go colour it as well! Obviously, this is coming from someone who finds trying to use photoshop akin to putting needles in their eyes...

Props to the letterer as well, she totally keeps with the tone of the art, I think. They could be hand draw, really.

Few techy-arty questions: What size did you work at? Do you mostly use a brush? What did you use on the panel borders - they're really nice and thick!

Thanks for the kind words all, I'm glad you liked the story.

To answer Suedehead's tech questions - I drew these pages on 11x14 bristol board, with the actual artwork measuring about 50% larger than print size. I inked it, as I ink most of my recent work, with Faber-Castell Pitt brush markers - very handy markers with a flexible felt tip that is a decent approximation of a real brush. There are other kinds of brush markers on the market but I prefer the Pitts because they have fadeproof and waterproof india ink in them. Panel borders I inked with a .07 Staedler Pigment Liner.

You can see the original black and white unlettered art for this story here (the lower half of the list):

Mephisto - Seaguy should be out in April or May of 2004, and if it's as successful as we hope and suspect it will be, there are plans for followups....

I liked this odd wee take on the Buffy vampire mythos. I like the way the Buffy and Angel writers have been steering more towards the "personality remains intact" thing with vampires, (their original take was that the possessing demon could pretend, but it just wasn't there). This story seems teh ultimate iteration of this new direction. And Cameron's art is seven shades of gorgeous. How wrong is it, on a scale of one to ten, to fall in love with a comic character? Nice work, man.
