Lost passport...

We're currently in the process of turning the flat upside-down in the hope of finding my ten-year passport, which appears (somewhat inexplicably) to have gone walkabout at some point in the last month or so.

It's looking like I might have to get a new one - because a) I'm likely to be needing it as ID in the coming weeks (having sold the Edinburgh flat, we need to open a joint bank account for the profits, etc.), and b) we're hoping to go on a long-haul trip at the end of December/beginning of January.

Has anyone ever had to get a new UK passport in similar circumstances? How long does it take? What's the quickest way to go about it?

Thought I'd lost my passport a few months ago (just as i was about to renew it too) but was fortunately able to recover it through C2C rail's lovely lost property dept.

I sent away in octoberand it took about two weeks. I'm not sure what extra amount of time would be added for a lost passport but since this is low season in the passport office you shouldn't have too many worries, I'd hope...

passport issuing takes less or more time depending on how many applications they are processing... so now should be a good time.
you can rush it through by paying a wee bit extra, but i would go with 28 days.

(mine took about just less than two weeks once, and i have heard horror stories of them taking months)

If you get really desperate, you can make an appointment and turn up with the relevant documents and they will do it while you wait (normally a few hours) but that will cost £70 (or thereabout. The Home Office has an 'urgent applications' page which may be of use.

Funnily enough, I'm in a similar predicament- not sure if I even have one still, so I'm gonna apply fr a relacement. Got all the forms from the post office- they reckon on about a fortnight, but I'm not sure how true that is...

The home office will do it all by overnight if you can go in person and prove that you are to travel withing two weeks.
Otherwise it takes about two weeks. Going in person with all the right data (check the website) is much faster than sending things
in to the home office. There is an office near Hoxton and local ones everywhere. If you chance sending it in by post, expect a wait as they do not
even bother opening correspondence there for weeks once it even arrives.

I found my passport had expired and got a new one the next day. I just went along to the office in Petty France (apparently it seems to have closed now, they're now issuing from Globe House in Eccleston Square), waited around for a few hours, paid about thirty quid I think and bish bosh, I was in Sweden that evening. I'm sure they still do the same thing. There are advantages to living in the capital.

I did that when I renewed this passport and yeah, it only takes a minute (girl). Just wondered whether the fact that I've lost the existing one is likely to delay things at all.

I want to go with him when he finds out. I think some jackbooted lovely from the Home Office, with a big whip and a snarl, will take him into a sideroom off the passport office and chastise him. They probably make videos and sell them to pay for their fabulous new computers.
