Now that its all over, and the symbology exposed, lets just get it all out and done with by annotating the lot. It shouldn't be hard, I figure. While there's a lot in there, its not terribly hard to catch.

So to have a bit of fun with this, lets make this a migrating thread. By that, I mean I'll bounce it back and forth between F&TV and the Magick every couple of days. I figure that's the best way to get the job done for this one.

For format, pick a character, idea, setting, or detail and give a writeup of what they were stolen from or supposed to represent from classical mythology, philisophy, gnosticism, or whatever.

Please keep discussions about how the film was crap to the main thread in F&TV. This is an annotations thread, not a movie review thread. Its all about geeking over the details here.

I'll start with an easy one.

The Merovingian

In purpose, he is Hades, lord of the underworld. This is implied in Reloaded with the introduction of Persopheny as his wife. Further, with the vampires, werewolves, and ghosts in his employ. In Revolutions it is made obvious by the "Hell" button on the elevator, leading to the titty-twisting gothica fetish club in which he holds court. Here, he is portrayed less as the jet-setter so much as a mob boss. Thus again, he rules the underworld.

The name itself comes from a French conspiracy group who linked the Autharian "once and future king" prophesy with Christianity. The story goes that Jesus and Mary Magdlene had kids, and that the rightful ruler of France was descended from this line. Merovingians therefore were invested in a certain amount of divine power and rightful rulership over men due to their direct line of descent from God himself through Jesus, just as was the tradition in Northern Europe and elsewhere of drawing geneologies of kings that lead back to the gods themselves.

In the mythos of the Matix, this implies a connection with a previous The One. Such as that The Merovingian was himself a previous The One.

Lastly, he holds The Trainman in his employ, who is clearly Charon.

Persephony

The mythological bride of Hades who travels from Olympus to the underworld for half of the year to explain the Winter season. She's named outright, mainly so you can see the link between The Merovingian and Hades.

The Trainman

Charon, who ferrys the dead across the river Styx to Hades. He is in the employ of The Merovingian, who is Hades, in smuggling souls/programs between the worlds.

Not an annotation as such, but this image from the first issue of Miracleman:

...came to my mind as I watched the fight between Neo and Agent Smith in Revolutions. There's an almost identical image of Smith during the fight.

The fight in the movie also reminded me of that between Miracleman and Kid Miracleman in issue 2, complete with "bad guy ramming good guy into the ground, leaving a crater" and "whoops" moment on the bad guy's part.
