OK, since so many people obviously loved DARE, why hasn't Rian Hughes ever done much more in the way of comics?
All we seem to get these days are chick-lit book covers and Virgin in-flight safety films. Anyone know of any other Hughes comic work lurking around?
sorry i didn't read your post properly. he did a series of robo-hunter for 2000ad circa about 94 written by peter 'rubbish' hogan. shortly before that he did a series called really and truly with GM for 2000ad that folks have been fond remembering elsewhere on the board recently.
i've also got a weird little 32 page hardcover that he did [art+words] years ago, all retrofutur conspiracy, space institutes and characters with beards if i remember correctly [i don't]. can't remember what it was called now, something about sweets or bubblegum? lots of nice bluey greeny grey washes and stuff. now I'm stuck. Help!
Awww, Peter Hogan wasn't so bad. It was better than the awful Wagner/Gibson period (and far far far better than Mark Millar's take. That was so out of character it made my eyes bleed).
He did tales from beyond science, which was discussed in the "disturbing comics" thread. I love Ryan, he's one of my favourate comic book artists.
ah yes tales beyond science we were talking about that....but millar's slade was ace, saddam slade, samantha slade, sam slayed, going out with one of the fat slags, falling in love with cutie, rusian roulette with the guys from mash. lovin it me.
I dunno. Millar was all about the sickening ultraviolence, which was never what Sam Slade (that's S-L-A-Y-E-D to you!) was about. He had Judge Dredd execute Mr Ben too, the heartless bastard.
I did love Saddam Slade though. And the Watcher piss-take in that story looked like Moby.
rianhughes recently had a one man show (of the art variety) up in London showing the massive arry of stuff he's done - recently most of his comic work has been design orientated - various fonts ad things a few covers plus designing the WILDcats v3 covers with Dustin Ngyan (SP!)
I love this guy! I was re-reading both Wildcats 3.0 and Gotham Girls last week, and as I was marveling at the cool Wildcats covers, I noticed that he had done the Batgirl cover of Gotham Girls as well. Me likey!
I met Rian a few years ago - I commissioned him to do some artwork and covers for my band Magicdrive (we were signed then!). I told him I loved Dare and The Science Servise and asked him if he could do some stuff like that for us. He did, though he said he hadn't done pen-and-ink work for years! He seemed very flattered that I liked his work, and said that The Science Service hadn't sold. Having said that, he had a big plush office in London with staff and seemed very successful.
"Hey chaps... thanks for the good words. Nice to know people are savvy to the design side of things. I haven't drawn comics for something approaching 10 years, but that absence will probably be coming to an end soon courtesy of a certain Scottish pal."
Adam - really? - cool. There was actually some CD boxes and stuff at the exhibition but (to my shame) I can't quite remember what the name of the band was...
