I've never really been a big Soap Opera person (how could I be? Prior to these last few months I was usually in college at the time they were on). However, starting sometime around last June, I began watching "All My Children".
Why "All My Children"? Simple. Usually, in the summer, I often decide to watch an old TV show I remember from my childhood, mostly out of nostalgia and boredom. Two summers ago it was "Perfect Strangers". Last summer it was "The Wonder years". This summer it was "All My Children". You see, when I was younger and my Mom wasn't working she would usually watch "AMC". Sometimes I would watch it too, mostly out of curiosity.
So, this June, one afternoon I was flicking through the channels and I came across the show. To my surprise, actors who had been a part of the show in the 80's or so were still on. So I began watching it, figuring I'd stop come Fall when, hopefully, I'd have a full-time job to distract me from such things.
However, as the summer went on I began to become obsessed with the show (to be fair, a lot was going on story-wise during the summer: Rape, murder, and things of that nature). Gradually I began to have favorite characters. Soon I was reading "ABC Soaps in depth". With a sickening feeling I realized I had become addicted.
Now, it is Fall, I still have no full-time job, and I can't stop watching. Right now there's this big murder mystery that's been going on for weeks and I'm really curious to see whodunnit. Hopefully once that's resolved I'll be able to quit.
I guess there could be worse soaps I could be watching. The acting on "AMC" isn't as bad as most other soaps, from what I've seen (I actually care about some of the characters). And it does have Susan Lucci, who is pretty much the queen of soap operas. I dunno. |
