NYE in NYC

Me and my laydee are spending New Year's in New York City (w00t, indeed), but we just don't know what to do on the big night! Who can recommend me a quality party where we can dance all night? We don't mind forking out a bit for tickets, but I don't want to be somewhere that'll expect me to do it "big willie style", like with a big bottle of champagne and some sensible shoes, you feel me?

Also any recommendations for good hip hop clubs/venues we can go to on Saturday 27th Dec would be very much appreciated.

Thank you!

Oh, and to the NYC crew, bear this in mind when making suggestions: I'm from LONDON, and I want to be IMPRESSED.

First of all I have no idea why this thread is in the Conversation when it's obviously a Gathering thread. I'll move it promptly..in about 12 - 24 hours unless somebody complains.

Oh, and you want to be impressed? Come over to a cop and kick him in the balls as hard as you can. You'll be amazed at how well the cops restrain themselves from kicking you back.

Lentil, you're going to be in New York?

*excited*

Except that I don't live in New York.

Can I afford to go to New York?

*counts pennies*

Lentil I shall be there myself at the start of December. Always happy to do some live research for you my friend.

Let me know what sort of thing you're after and I'll get you the information.

Yo!

This is a conversation thread because I'm asking for information rather than proposing a meet. Um... not cos I'm you know, unfriendly or anything, just that I don't have any kind of relationship with any of the posters I know to be based in NY.

Qalyn, sir, I am not entirely sure how to interpret your comment. I was under the impression that you considered your home city to be vastly superior to mine, and would thus expect me to be impressed by even the most mundane aspects of the "Big Apple".

Or maybe that was the point of your comment and I have fallen into some kinda "double sarcasm" trap... damn you either way.

Perse, can you afford New York? Can I? Hell no! Do I have time for a trip to Chicago? Uhhh...

I'll send you a postcard though!

Oh, and you want to be impressed? Come over to a cop and kick him in the balls as hard as you can. You'll be amazed at how well the cops restrain themselves from kicking you back.

Gosh, I wouldn't want to do something like that, particularly if the poor fellow's not prepared to defend himself. Doesn't sound like fun anyway, y'know?

That comment about being from LONDON was, like, not entirely serious. Besides, I ripped the strident-capitalisation-of-home-town thing from Qalyn. He started it.

Swishy, that would be ace. Thanks.

God, thing is I go clubbing so infrequently these days i'm not sure that i know myself. I definitely want to go to one really good hip hop night while I'm there, but I think for NYE we want to be dancing around to some house-based music, nothing too filth/sweaty but not too glam either... I don't know if NYC clubs have dress codes but I baulk at the prospect of not being able to don my choice of footwear. Not that I'm a scruffbag either. If it helps, the club I've been to most in the last twelve months is Fabric (last tinme was Kenny Hawkes) and have generally enjoyed it very much, although it's partly as a default becasue I always seem to miss the obscure nights that my club-savvy friends go to.

What sort of thing are you going to be getting into while you're out there?

Sorry, Lentil, I was goofing on the strident hometown pride and all that, but I wasn't laying any traps--you should've seen the stuff I decided was too mean-spirited to post. There are a lot of hip hop clubs in the city, but I don't know anything about them; NYC Barbelith tends to prefer local bars with good jukeboxes. When you get here, check out the Village Voice, a free paper that has good club listings, and you could try Time Out, too. I'm biased, and this may not apply to New Year's, but Brooklyn is usually more fun--bars and clubs in Manhattan are usually either deserted or packed with yuppies and far too expensive.

You should also check out Flavorpill, Everything New York and Manhattan User's Guide for listings in the weeks before your visit.

The better known NYC clubs - places like Limelight (now Avalon) and Centro Fly - are generally not so great. Annoying assholes and shitty door policies abound. I've found that the smaller events are a lot more fun (Turntables on the Hudsonand 718 Loft Sessions throw some good parties).

Shopping and tourist stuff. I'm going with my mum

Thanks Q + Red Cross, I've only just got around to checking out the links you provided. I'm realising that maybe I've started worrying about this too early, as none of the parties/ venues I've looked at have NYE events advertised just yet. Well, except for horrendous sounding things with champagne toasts at midnight and trapeze acts going on above yr head. The Manhattan advice sounds right too - I have been shocked and appalled by the number of places in manhattan listed as "exclusive" or "upscale", which we all know means "arsey and full of people who only go there to prove they can afford the drinks"...

... sorry, am particularly sensitive to that kind of stuff at the moment as recently had to spend an evening in Bar Mezzo in Soho.

btw, Qalyn - no sweat, I actually feel bad now for having made you feel the need to apologise. My online banter skills need sharpening.

Mr Swish, I went to NYC with my rents in 1997, and although I was doing touristy stuff and too young to drink it was still one of the best holidays I've had.
