Today I experimented with making some electronic music for the first time. Lots and lots of samples.

Haywire Havok - Robo Ritual

Fun shit! Whatta you guys got?

I'm slowly in the process of making a similarly sample-heavy track called WHERE ARE THE DEAD?, a product of my much talked about but never actually done 'Devil at the Wheel' idea. It's sounding rather, um, primitive. Sadly, you can't hear it cos it ain't finished.

I would comment on your track, but I haven't got my speakers plugged in right now.. I'll download it tomorrow if I get a chance.

Good stuff, you lot! Rage, what did you use to put that together?

Also:
What's the quickest and simplest way to make mp3s available on the web these days? Are there any free services around? Preferably one that doesn't care about copyright issues (ie samples).

Nanomites, a song I just did with my friend Harry. It's kinda power-poppy.

Sklent: Mr Piano, meet Ms. Digital Delay. You two seem like you'd make a cute couple. Very romantic.

Paleface: Oboe... gives me pleasure.

Tomm0: The first link, she don't work. The second link, she's not written so good.

Les Waters gives me some hipster fear. Like, crazy, man.

Rage: you are a dance machine. the dancers, they are your robots.

Ron Geesin had a track on a Cleopatra Records tribute to Pink Floyd that was a sort of sonic answer to "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathering Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" that I put on quite a few mixtapes when it first came out. Because I liked it that much.

That's the same Geesin? Are you Geesins? How strange....

More Les, sorry. The vocals for this one were recorded live in the operating theatre as the singer received a much needed lobotomy. The frustration of being 18 months on an NHS waiting list shines through:

In My Brane

V. different, this one. Possibly the cheesiest tune you will ever hear. Reminds me of a butch Gary Numan but I can't put my finger on why:

Superbloop (aka JOYCORE!)

Eek! Is that good or bad?

Pleasure - by Paleface> Very nice indeed. Puts me in mind (a bit) of African Headcharge - I think it's the voice. Feels like a silly thing to say but I really appreciate the proper stereo separation! Is it real keyboards or soft synths, or what?

TommO - The Pennines / Iron Bridge> Couldn't get the second link to work, which is a shame cos the first one is a cracker. Love the bubbly noises.

grant & Harry - Nanomites> This must be my fave grant track so far - is that you doing the harmonies or Harry? Especially dig the glockenspiel (?) solo!

Btw, should this be in the Creation forum?

Les is, like, FAR OUT, daddy-o!

There's a definite early 60s garage sound to that first track. I can picture a beatnik band being tossed down the stairs and playing all the way down... or perhaps...were they just reacting to the lobotomy? That's definitely an upbeat Gary Numan song. An optimistic productivity march for our robot overlords.

On my song, Harry and I both do harmonies, and that's a toy piano solo. I'm very proud of the toy piano.

Iron Bridge is making me see things.

----
Focus, the 24 meg version, has lovely feedback at the beginning (I don't get to play with feedback as much as I'd like). I think it should be played in the places where people dance. Under the ocean. Wide awake. What're the words to the chorus? Now you see clear? The vocals have a Doctor Who villain feel.
Dictator, on the other hand, reminds me of the Stranglers. This is a good reminding.

in the beginning?!?! did you listen to the 20 minute feedback serenade at the end?!?
but yes , we all should get to play with feedback as often as possible...
since u asked, the words are:
now i see clear, i see the big picture, allow myself to get lost and surround myself with chaos
now i see clear, I see the big picture , the details get lost and I'm drifting out of focus

thanx for the "doctor who villain" comparison, that makes my day
not really familiar with the stranglers, but i'll check em out. sounds like a compliment, thnx!

Man, I love this thread!

TommO> Iron Bridge = gorgeous. Im a big fan of ever so slightly atonal things, and I hear a bit of that in there. I dunno if it's deliberate or not, but it works a treat for me. I don't know if this is what grant means when he says it makes him "see things", but both of your tracks put me in mind of old films of slightly spooky bits of British countryside. The titles fit perfectly. Got a Kes vibe to 'em. Very nice.

h3r> F---, more quality stuff! (I almost feel like I should be a bit more negative, just so that it doesn't look like I'm just being nice about everyone to be polite or summat, but sod that) Of the first lot you posted, my favourite is 'Galaxies'. Reminds me first of Loop, (feedback over meaty chugging riff) and then of the Pixies. Really well put together - do you make a living from your music? By which I mean I can imagine lots of the people being into this. The earlier stuff is cool too, real classic dream-pop stuff. Reminds me of Butterfly Child and - vocals wise - Warm Jets era Eno.

Rage> Fantastic! Both tracks are so 'you' it's untrue. Is that you doing vocals on the first track as well? I love the stop/start bits, always been a big sucker for that, especially when in the middle of an otherwise unrelenting assault like that. Got any spare vocals you don't want that I could use?

TommO:

"Saveloy, really enjoying Superbloop though some more of those screechy NHS frustrated vocals wouldn't go amiss"

Your wish is my command! First, a romantic duet between both sides of the vocalist's brain. This was recorded live during the singer's 5th much-needed autopsy of the year (it's the only way he can find out what he's been up to):

Hee Haw

Second, a more straight-forward pop tune. You'll all be whistling this in the street tomorrow (warning - contains screaming from the outset):

Oaf Prod

(That 2nd track is a classic example of something that sounded meaty and brilliant at 2am in your headphones at home, but absolutely dire and tinny the next day on yer work PC...)

the atonal thing is kind of intentional, my synths weren't in tune with one another and i didn't notice 'till i started playing, in the end i liked the effect though so just left it like that.

todays favorites were ragolutions "hatred" and saveloy's "hee haw". hardcore!
are both of you located in the US? does the political climate make u so angry? i like it.

saveloy, thnx for the kind words. occasionally i do make some money yes.... all the "NWR" stuff is new and being tested on you people, hopefully it will make me rich

so the way i see it it's just a matter of time b4 we start remixing each other and doing some collaborations .....

rage do u want to scream on top of some beats if i send you something? maybe make it duet with saveloy's lobotomy vocalist?
grant i'd love to remix nanomites. do u have it as seperate trax?

we could also do a chain-letter type musical composition. who is in?

"hardcore! are both of you located in the US? does the political climate make u so angry? i like it."

Thanks! I'm in the UK, and I'm afraid I can't take credit for the anger in the vocals, that was a talented pal of mine who screamed gibberish into a mic for 10 minutes to go with another track we were mucking about with. We didn't get around to finishing it, so I sampled the vocal and crowbarred it into those scream tracks above.

"so the way i see it it's just a matter of time b4 we start remixing each other and doing some collaborations ....."

I love collabs, although I can't devote much free time to it these days. I'm well up for doing something as long as no one else minds me taking an age to do my bit. I'd be especially interested in buggering about with someone else's vocals or sending my stuff out for someone else to fool around with.

I don't, but Harry does.

I can ask him about that...

I'm up for any chain letter.

Exit...complete chaos. Paradigm shit.

Reality, man!

I'm a little scared by that. And I'm not ashamed of it.
The hatred one is more terrifying, of course.

Oaf Prod seems to be calling itself Brane Plate. It's catchy, in a tearing sheet metal with my bare hands kind of way. Music to be Hulk by.

I've finally got around to downloading a couple of these mp3s and I likes what I hears a lot.

Les Waters - Phant Biscuits
This is.. strange and tremendous and made me chuckle in a way that instrumental music really shouldn't.. I think Grant's "beatnik band playing all the way down the stairs" description nails it .. mad and rhythmic and groovy like the Velvet Underground's early demo tracks.. are Les Waters still a going concern or are these old tracks?

Rage - Hatred..
This is totally, like, really rocking! Very Hanin Elias. Send a demo to Digital Hardcore, like, right now.. seriously - there's stuff on their big compilation of American bands ("Don't Fuck With US") that sounds similar to this but isn't nearly as good..

I'll check out a few more tomorrow.

Thanks, Rizla. I'm afraid Les Waters haven't done anything with proper instruments since 1998, when the guitar/bass player moved out of the big, knackered up house we used to make noises in (on the remote tree farm where he worked - perfect) and into a tiny council place in Borden. He's since struck lucky and moved into his g'friend's house on a big posh estate (that's 'estate' as in there's a big fuck-off mansion on it!) so we might be able to get going again if he can sort it out with the Lord of the Manor and I can find the drum kit. Normal people would rent a rehearsal space but we're too skint.

How are you getting on with your project?

Well funny you should mention that because..

DEVIL AT THE WHEEL presents WHERE ARE THE DEAD?

3 minutes of nightmarish horror movie atmospherics, brought to you in glorious mono. The utter incompetence of the piece will hopefully be disguised by the absolutely appalling recording quality, which I feel gives it a certain "made by a basement-dwelling mentalist" mystique. The phrase "highly disturbing" may not be entirely inappropriate.

I think the first 25 seconds or so work quite well but it's all downhill from there, so feel free to post negative comment - it's just a bit of messing about really.

(hope the link works ok)

Excellent mentalist vibe there! Do you remember a while back when I said that my ideal radio station would be one that mysteriously appeared and disappeared at random times of day and night and broadcast indecipherable speech and creepy noises, something that made you think you'd tuned in to something you weren't meant to hear? That is exactly the sort of thing I imagine being on there. Cool.

Reminds me a bit of a couple of Einsteurzende Neubauten tracks, from Kollaps and Drawings of Patient OT; there's one which sounds like someone whistling in a huge underground space, got the same spooky feel to it. The only bit I'm not keen on is the noisy repetative section near the end. Otherwise, good stuff. How did you put it together?
