What the hell is going on?

Well once again we were graced by the MySql messages and while that alone would not be worth commenting on what I saw when the system broke down looked odd enough to warrent comment.

At first I thought it was just a system crash. I was reloading a forum while reading and the forum, the magick came up empty. I reloaded again and it was again empty. I loaded the Main page to see what it was showing and it was oddly empty. Not totally empty but most of the forums had no threads listed. That was odd in my, admittably limited, experience site crashes usually are total. I reported this to my friend Brian who I was talking with over MSN and he said virtually the same thing. He said that he figured that the site was hacked.

The interesting thing is that he was just saying how he was going to write Tom and he figured that Tom might reinstate him as a member now. And while we were discussing that and rage's board pop down went barbelith.

Brian: I think I will write tom now.
Me: cool
Brian: see where he's at & if he'll unlock both my IP and Mod.
Me: barbelith just crashed
Brian: really?
Me: yeah
Brian: like how? Just not working no more?
Me: The forums are all empty
Brian: weird...
Me: or mainly empty
Me: shit the trolls took out the board!!!!
Brian: an attakc or accident?
Brian: attack!
Brian: crazy.
Me:there's tons of threads missing from the Convo!
Brian: weird
Me: two of yours are near top and not respoded to since end of Sept!
Brian: crazy
Brian: hacked for sure!
Me: you think?
Brian: i think maybe.
Me: yikes
Me: there is a glitch about "source code" down by the creation: sounds totally suspicious...
Me: anti hacking == anti terrorism?
Brian: 'cause "source code" as far as I understand it (not too far) is barbelith, right?
Brian: wha U mean?
Brian: i get it
Brian: maybe!
Me: • noooo fu-ture for you
the visible threads
Me: yeah weird eh, but no thread only a message.
Brian: U tried clickin it right?
Me: yeah
Me: either a weird crash or a hack
Brian: this is big.
Me: you getting paranoid?
Brian: not really, only curious. Why what r u thinking?
Me: well that someone finally really attacked the board
Me: right when you were about to ask to join again
Brian: that seems fairly certain. and yeah "anti-hacking=anti-terrorism"
Brian: synchronicity works in strange and wonderful ways!
Me: yeah
Me: I hope not too much is lost
Me: but the prior ones shouldn't be
Me: yeah
Me: but that seems, well magickal, the "a ramp that runs the length of solar flares."
Me: but the prior ones shouldn't be
Brian: yeah
Brian: totally.
Me: • A ramp that runs the length of...
• Solar Flares.
• Anti-Hacking == Anti-Terrorism...

Me: and 0 is one of your names
Brian: yep.
Brian: tom's gonna' be pissed.
Me: they have felt the wrath of Ic-dU? even if we didn't do it
Me: I'm in the convo evaluating the situation as to what was left and how it might or might not mean something.
Brian: one page of stuff left. had to be intentional.
Brian: thread killah I kill threads seems pretty clear. You win whoever you are!
Me: yeah and it is not the top stuff either
Brian: no it has been hand picked it seems by the dates.
Me: shit no how many of them are you?
Me: and one is andrew
Brian: what you mean?

Brian: autopilot and I were called twins in persephone's eyes, you know.
Me: really
Me: hmm
Me: I think someone did this refering to you
Me: shit shit shit
Me: beautiful disaster though
Brian: it's a nice tribute for me though!
Me: yeah
Brian: I thank whoever it was for their comic genius!
Me: yeah
Brian: I wish i had that mad enough comp-fu powers!
Me: same
Me: once upon a time I did
Brian: mad props to the mystery person yo!
Me: yeah
Brian: I wonder if andrew has been brushing up on his skillzzzz...
Me: hmm
Me: didn't you say rex had the fu?
Brian: he got some he had learned from andrew...
Me: oh
Brian: sounds pretty suspicious eh...
Me: yeah
Me: I still think they might be one and the same
Brian: so perhaps andrew learned to break them at the level of the code then?
Brian: rex and andrew?
Me: possible
Brian: did I mention that to you before?
Me: If I brushed up I could kill the site like this
Brian: yeah but that's not really the way you play is it?
Me: no
Me: I was never distructive
Me: and I am less so now
Brian: and that's good
Me: killing is easier than a lot of things
Brian: destruction is always easier than creation. this is certainly both and I can't say that they didn't in some ways sew the seeds of it, eh?
Me: it is easier to crash barbelith then to make barbelith
Me: but this is more selective than just destruction
Me: this is a level or two up
Brian: yeah i figure it's rex.
Brian: he's a genius that fella'.
Me: yeah
Me: but this is evil genius it is
Brian: exactly.
Brian: so yeah, in a way they've totally been hit by an extension of I c d U?: the renegade madman genius arm of our dis/collective!
Me: yeah
Me: it looks that way
Me: he wouldn't have done this if most of us hadn't been kicked
Me: you don't shit where you live
Brian: exactly.
Me: but if we don't live there anymore
Brian: it never had to come to this but they broke the camel's back pretty much.
Me: yeah
Me: less is there now
Me: looking more like an sql crash
Brian: so none of the threads even have content.
Me: no
Me: now I can't see anythign but the main page and sql errors
Brian: yeash it is eating itself!
Brian: up it's own arse indeed!
Me: looks that way
Brian: tom's gonna be so so so so so so so so so so so so so super pissed about this!
Brian: hahahahahahha
Brian: i hope he doesn't have a freakin' heart attck though.
Brian: that would suck.
Me: nah he is going to think it is a crash now
Me: the stuff that made is suspisous is gone
Me: whoever sent a message and then erased his tracks
Brian: maybe. it's all in the logs somewhere, right?
Me: maybe
Me: but the immediate reaction will be to a crash
Me: less paranoia
Me: looks slick if you ask me
Brian: yeah it has been really well executed & I am glad that we got to see it go down!
Me: they could assume it is a crash or they could look deeper and see the truth
Me: we just saw performance art
Brian: exactly
Me: yeah
Brian: they can lie to themselves more if they want, eh?
Me: sure why not
Brian: the exactly was for the "performance art" to be clear & not the whatever
Brian: yeah.
Me: yeah
Me: I understood

Brian: wow he stole it all. I wonder how much they can recover?
Me: probably most of it
Me: every thing from the last backup
Me: which may have been today or a week ago
Brian: I betcha' it's a big hassel though right?
Me: it could be
Me: but I would hope that tom and cal have a good set up
Brian: who knows?
Me: I seem to remember mention about automatic backup
Me: hell I even back up with a proggie called ghost
Brian: could that be tampered with too?
Me: usually kept sort of separate
Brian: what's ghost?
Me: ghost basically just copies the hd as a file
Me: you can load it so that no changes are made
Brian: to where?
Me: every time the computer loads it can be the same as before
Me: it is used in computer labs with standard set ups a lot
Brian: can't that be fucked with too?
Me: harder too
Brian: how do i get it?
Me: be cause the ghost is usually on another computer or hd
Me: It is not free
Brian: nodoubt.
Me: I got it off of someone from a friend
Brian: col.
Me: symantec norton ghost 2003
Brian: it's back
Me: nice
Me: automatic recovery even
Brian: post is there
Brian: EZ fix.
Me: even her post
Me: nice
Me: they have a good backup system
Brian: i betcha' rex ain't so happy tough.
Me: ha
Brian: though
Me: maybe maybe not
Brian: he'll have to try harder next time!
Brian: what ya mean?
Me: if he did it he was probably aware of the back up ing
Brian: shrug.
Me: A message more than destruction
Brian: intuition says "I doubt it."
Me: yeah
Brian: about the back-up.
Me: I knew about it
Me: if he is more compusmart than me he would pretty much have to know
Brian: maybe? depends on the focus and goal of his learning.
Me: true
Me: but disabling backups is a hacker tradition
Brian: easy to ignore the obvious when you are seeing through a narrow vision, but who knows really?
Me: I doubt he would think it would be that quick though
Brian: exactly.
Me: I didn't expect that quick or total
Me: and I knew they had one and a good one
Brian: start a ead about it in the convo maybe? about what you saw...
Me: sure
Brian: good.
Me: but most of what I saw relates to you
Brian: so?
Me: okay
Brian: coyote the reporter right?
Me: yeah
Brian: tellin' it like it is yo!
Brian: tell em.
Me: Laying open the guts of the world and sniffing the entrails
Brian: and exactly.

I think the board was down for around 18 hours. The fault was caused by a locked table in the database. The problem has been resolved. Didn't anyone notice?!

Tryphena Absent
09:38 / 28.10.03
Well I was asleep but it can't have been down for 18 hours because I was online at half 12 last night and it was fine then. That's not even 12 hours ago. To add clarity to my earlier post which I realise was rather obscure... this thread combines the idea of hardware/software being screwed with attempting to get a banned member of the board back online. I don't really have a problem with Mod but it's still a bit fucking cheeky.

I noticed when I came in this morning, but I just assumed it was Cal fiddling around under the table as usual...

I agree: at the first the thread made me wonder whether Nietchze was canvasing opinion as to Mod's re-admission. I'll keep my opinions on this quiet for now.

That all sounds like perfectly normal MySQL cockups to me. If the Database isn't accessible for any reason, you'll see those sorts of errors.

The board was playing up when I was on it last night at about 8pm (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings time). It was all rather odd.
