Magickal Costumes

The Golden Dawn had elaborate ritual robes, Witches use nakedness as a costume, shamans have magic hats and such, tattoos are attire, what costumes do you use? How much effect do they have? What are the pros and cons? How much does wearing magical attire help you do your thing?

My only magical attire is the pentacle around my neck or any other iconography I happen to be sporting around my person. Lately I've been thinking about having a pentacle tattooed on to me so that I wear it constantly and don't have to remember it. I don't wear any particular costume for ritual work though I have considered it on and off over the last decade. I think that it must help ritual workings along to a certain degree but it's always been a little too difficult to decide what to wear, when to wear it and more to the point how to keep such a costume. I prefer not to wear shoes but find it isn't practical if I'm outdoors in cold weather.

I doubt anything like that really matters, not to me anyhow - though if you can get a kick out of using costume/masks/whatever then good luck to you!!! I happily cast my sigils in ordinary clothes, pyjamas, birthday suit, whatever...... I'm into the practicalities, for me collecting other stuff like that is a metaphor for the work.

Having no experience of ritual magick other than the studying I've done I would imagine that the use of "costumes" would aid the magician in their work. Like putting on work clothes or something. Making it part of the ceremony and getting your head into the right gear for what is to come later.

Plus, I guess, when working with deities or similiar then dressing correctly shows respect towards them. Kind of like wearing your best suit for the important job interview.

I have curiously always had at least one magickally empowered item in my wardrobe. Usually it is a cloaky-capey thing, or a dress that is kinda cloaky. At the moment, I have a cloak that is kinda like a dress.

I actually didn't realise that I empowered certain articles of clothing, until one day I lost my cloak on an airplane. I was coming back from the Bahamas and promptly got loaded on the plane. I could have misplaced it, but I was thinking...how exactly does one loose anything on a plane - an enclosed area with minimal exits? I kinda freaked, which wasn't good because I had to go through customs. They don't look kindly upon drunk, hysterical women chanting "My cloak!, my cloak!...I empowered that shit man! They've stolen my soooouuuul!!" Yes, I was searched. I hae been known to over react, especially when drunk. *ahem*

This was enlightening for me though, because I realised how much energy (read: mojo baby!) I had put into this article of clothing. When it quite literally *disappeared* I felt like I had lost a finger or some valuble limb.

This is now a tradition of mine. I always have one article of clothing empowered. I usually wear this article of clothing the most out of anything I have until it is a rag or it is lost. It is my "uniform". In it, I am protected. I am enhanced and more focused. If I loose it or it is stolen, or even ragged beyond repair, I don't freak anymore. I look at it like I am moving on, transforming. It is more like molting, shedding my old skin. A new item always seems to pop up soon enough afterward and take it's place.

Sometimes people instinctually feel the empowerment I give my special article. I had a girl at work in a panic because she wanted to buy my cloak so bad. She offered me all kinds, but I wouldn't part with it, (not yet anyway). I realised she was a witch also and I could "see" her knowing. Finally I told her, looking directly into her eyes, unblinking, "Yes, I empower my shit." (Crass I know, but this is how the girls talk in the changeroom)She left me alone, anyway.

I am not much for jewelery. I use a gold ring for dreaming and a pentacle I can put talismans into the back of.

Boots are always magickal for me. I can't explain.
I'll have to ponder that beyond, I like boots...bleh
