Society needs more gay potsmoking policemen. I say we help this guy.

From today's Independent, the latest in the whole Brian Paddick saga.

Interested to see that there's a demo called to demand his reinstatement. I can see myself going to that one.

the guy seems to be good at his job. and various people really want him forced out. I think it comes at a very interesting moment in the whole drug debate thing in the UK at the mo...

What do y'all think of this one, anyway?

The lesser of many evils without a doubt. I'll try to attend the demo, and can peps post details of what time on tuesday if/when they get it?

I agree. We want more like him and fewer looneys who try to do Joan Bakewell for blasphemy.

Haus about we all give each other a big lovely huggle?

In fact, let's embark on an aggressive retraining campaign. Anyone who tries to prosecute Joan Bakewell for Blasphemy is compelled to smoke lots of dope and shag lots of lovely lovely men.

Sorry, being flippant. But these two facts laid end to end really do have such a synergistic pissing-off effect.

As mentioned before, I'm a regular on the board where he posted his comments.

I'm encouraged that there's at least one policeman who can distinguish between "anarchy" and "anarchism". Until he gets fired, that is.

Curiously all the Lambeth residents I know think he's a sound bloke who has the right idea, and that's not just the smokers. My stepmother (who had a letter in the Guardian about it) is all for him, after having to deal with the useless, arrogant, hidebound Lambeth Vice Squad.

Cultural Awareness training days in the Met, run by Haus: quote:Anyone who tries to prosecute Joan Bakewell for Blasphemy is compelled to smoke lots of dope and shag lots of lovely lovely men.

Cool. Can't make the demo Tuesday but will be down in London and up for shagging at the weekend. All learning requires an experiential component, after all. Will bring some grass...

I read that another bit of these allegations is that he shags on trains! A stoned anarchist polis commander shagging on the Heathrow Express?! I couldn't care less if it's true or not, the very idea of it gets him my vote.

I work in Lambeth and my boss is currently drafting a letter of support, Paddick was the only person who volunteered for the job here and he has had an absolutely amazing effect on the crime in the area-everybody should read exactly what he wrote on the urban 75 board because it comes across a lot less 'politically naive' than the quotes made in the papers.

Also i'd like to second the point about the distinction between 'Anarchy' and 'Anarchism', fridgemagnet, it's trully amazing how someone with his intelligence has been allowed into the position that he's got.

Im glad a demo has been arranged and a thread should be started so people can meet up beforehand-I can't believe i'm supporting a policeman (!) but fuck, needs must as the devil drives!

Ummmm, rather naievely and without any quality information at all, I've started at thread in The Gathering for this demo thing.

Could someone go and post some details please!

I'll definately be there if I can, bringing along some friends hopefully.

Couldn't find the thread in the gathering, and am all for helping Paddick, one of teh few 'bent coppers' (sorry) I'd like to help - but a thought strikes me.

Wouldn't a demo be playing into the hands of the Daily Mail?

It would be so easy to turn it into a 'great unwashed call for their hero's reinstatement' type bit of bullshit.

Letter writing, political lobbying, playing them at their game - that's how I'd handle this one. Anyone see my point, or am I just being a twat?

...so we dress sharp! what's the problem?

I haven't been unwashed since my dropout days. Revolutionary thinking and personal hygiene need not be strangers... seriously though, how is not having a demo going to weaken the Mail's position?

did anyone go to the meeting last night? the bbc were reporting live from the meeting. it looked well attended, and the report was sympathetic to paddick, although they didn't mention homophobia, which is a big element here, i think.

they interviewed a woman who agreed with paddick being removed from his post. she came across rather badly, protesting rather too much that it wasn't about him being gay, but that because someone had said something nasty about him, his position was untenable. bit weak, i think!

Yeah, a few of us went last night and the overall feeling was definitely one of support for Paddick-the woman who was protesting, apparently, was someone whose son had died in police custody and was treated less than graciously when she jumped up and caused a rucus when Paddick actually showed up which was disapointing-im glad the media took a sympathetic view but the meeting was badly managed, too many speakers not enough debate-and although that woman obviously has an important issue to make it was niether the time nor the place to do it.

As a meeting of support it was a great success, however like some of Paddicks comments a little politically naive...

This is Local London's take on it:

currently our hottest vote topic. I particualary like the picture of the green/pig costume, and love the way that the traditional 'enemy' of the narrow-minded mebers of the left is now the bright young thing.

Community policing were it's mouth is, in my opinion.

Just came across this comment on the BBCs Talking Point site;

The people who are against this man are all saying that he has committed criminal acts by smoking cannabis and having a relationship with a person on probation, which in their view are seriously criminal acts, and they claim that they are not prejudiced against him on account of his being a pervert. Of course he should be reinstated, and all the people who are against him should be first fired, then tied down and buggered by a rhinoceros.

Yes. Hmmm... does the boy Morris' subversion spread that far? (Hope so.)
On a slightly less monged, though no less mad, note- the Daily Mail (of course. God bless 'em) have a 2-page article today on why Paddick is WRONG, why this is (wait for it... yes, here it comes... hear the crowd applaud as the Mail launch into their famous hit...) political correctness GONE MAD!!! (And, for anyone who doesn't know me, I'd like to point out that I get PAID to read newspapers. I don't actually BUY the Daily Mail.) Really, I don't recommend you buy it just to check it out. It says exactly what you'd expect.
And it's bollocks.
