Like a shortened version of 'motherfucking', as inspired by the unfeasibly insult-sounding holiday Mothering Sunday, which can in itself be used an an exclamation of frustration.

"This mothering bloody thing!" etc.

or simply

"MOTHERING SUNDAY! What the hell are you up to??"

Heinlein's 'tanj' is alright, he also used 'tanstaafl' (there ain't no such thing as a free lunch). But not offensively. Sci-fier E E 'Doc' Smith made up space gods just so his characters could swear by their unusual bodyparts "By Klono's Iron testicles!" and such. Genius.

Clunge is a personal fave, to rhyme with 'lunge'. "You clungemonger!"

Clunge is quite similar to Monty Python's 'Splunge', which as I remember was a word used when uncertain of what to say next. Clunge is probably the more fruity next step - like the difference between twat and cunt, perhaps.
Although I'll probably get slapped down by a Monty Pedant now.
