Forcing creation by mass delusion

This might belong in the Magick-section, or with the Film-stuff, but I'll put it here.

When I first read this thread about the film Donnie Darko I went "wow, seems great".

Then, I tried to open the web-site, and it didn't work. The thread was full of people trying to get to see the film, but failing. It was cancelled here and there. And the descriptions and analyses started to seem... too much. Too good to be true.

So, it dawned on me that it was a put-on. That some genius off-board had created a conspiracy to make a full-on improvise-a-thon describing a film that should be, and fool the rest of us into desperately looking for it, demanding it from video-stores and so-on.

I was impressed with the fact that "someone with connections" had managed to get it listed in the imdb.com, and that it was discussed in a multitude of fora.

I even let some of my friends in on the "secret". And "played along" to some others.

Imagine my disappointment when I actually found out Donnie Darko could be found in a local film store. I actually had a long period of vertigo, paranoidly existing between two universes, one where the film is "real" and one where the film is a "fiction".

Go back, read the thread on the film from the begining, with this mind-set, and you may see how I could pick out the "secret messages", the hidden winks and nudges by the people in on the conspiracy.

Now, I'm cured of my affliction. I accept that the film, Donnie Darko, exists, and was fun, even if a bit of a let-down.

However, the original concept of a conspiracy discussing and hyping something fictional and "hard-to-get", and making a mass of people believe in this really cool thing that they should go out and look for, is probably valid.

The test to see whether the project has been successful is, then, if someone outside this original conspiracy produces something that matches the description, as a valid commercial product.

In what area should this be tried? Underground-comix might be easiest, films hardest. Is it even possible, how many people would it take, where should these discussions take place, would it be fun to try?

Maybe we should hype a new drug, and see how long it takes for it to reach the market...

I was going to ask how hard it would be to get say, Amazon.com to list a book that hasn't been written yet, and then write a review for it. (Maybe even provide "sample" pages?)

I have friends who have done this with outsider musicians, to the point of actually recording four-track demos supposedly by the bands they made up.

Wasn't there a made-up band that did interviews in some big-name magazines? It was a bunch of culture-jam types back in the 80's, but I can't recall their name.

Not what I was looking for, but a fun read in the vein of muscial pranksterism: The Moscow Philharmonic Hoax

And for further inspiration/time wasting/slack: Rocklopedia Fakebandica
