It doesn't look as if this thread really got off the ground the last time, but I'm currently listening to their sophomore effort, Aha, Shake Heartbreak a lot, so I thought I'd revive.

There are any number of reasons not to trust Kings Of Leon as a band - the whole schtick about being the sons for the most part of a defrocked whisky preacher in the Deep South, raised in the back of Dad's cadillac, the rumours about their connection to the singer of The Mavericks, who wrote and performed 'Just Want To Dance The Night Away...' or whatever it was called from ten or so years ago - Apparently, this same sinister figure was responsible for most of their debut. And then there's the question of how a band with an average age of about Twenty manage to sound quite so sleazy and depraved.

I was pretty much held down and forced to listen to them by a friend of mine though, and was fairly amazed - I was expecting The Black Crowes on cheap biker speed, which to an extent is what they are, it's just that it's very good cheap biker speed. They're a bit like The Strokes with soul, Captain Beefheart having gone 'pop' on the basis that he could meet more gurlz that way, Big Star or The Rolling Stones pre the psychedelic errors of taste. And after those too. Basically, I can't recommend both of their albums highly enough, and if they are a bit trendy and I do get shot down in flames for being £50 man, checking the releases in the latest Uncut, I suppose I'll just about manage.

But what does anyone else think ?

Do Kings Of Leon rock, or do they suck ?

They're total record label puppet puppies.

If you want some real down home southern fried rock and roll with a big slice of punk swagger, try The Dexateens. Their second album Red Dust Rising is fantastic.

I'm totally prepared to believe that's what they in fact are, Miss K, but they don't, y'know, sound like it.

I mean they're not exactly N-Sync, are they ? Or are they...

Heard the appallingly-titled first album... I quite liked it. I was pleasantly surprised.

They sounds like a Skynyrd covers band trying to copy the Strokes.

They do to me. I found their second album extremely contrived sounding. A soundscape designed by a committee. Just my opinion.

The first album had some more gumption, though it's a little dull on repeated listening.

Anyway, not my cup of tea. Sozz! Let's agree to disagree

I thought Youth & Young Manhood was a great title! But then I am a cockjokesucker ...

I really liked the first album myself. As to their back-story, I'm a little dubious about it, but that doesn't mean they're 100% record-company puppets. The second album hasn't really grabbed me yet, but I'll give it a little more time...

I liked what I heard from YAYM and on that basis I bought their second album. And unfortunately I can't stand it. Nothing grabs me about it at all, just totally, mind numbingly, bland. And I like their back story too...

Lies, according to an interview I read. Also, they have like a dozen wardrobe people with em telling em what to wear to make em look rock n roll. which isnt very rock n roll.

I quite like the idea of the band being this corporate shambles, though - they've got their day in the sun, and whatever else they might be stretching the truth a bit about, one does get the feeling that they genuinely wanna rock !

Insofar as they don't apparently want to be like 50%, or eLERPHANT mAN.

Damnit

I heartily agree with what Alex has been saying in this thread - Kings of Leon are nowhere near as good as N-Sync, 50 Cent or Elephant Man.

None of whom are that great, really.

But they're not Kings of Leon.
