So what is satire then?

Exactly what it says on the tin. What is satire?

Is it intrinsically important as a method of political discourse, or is it just harmless entertainment or another branch of comedy?

Damn, if only you lot had paid attention when I flagged the Greenwich Satire Week thing back in the day you could have come along and seen a bunch of much fatter people who had no firm idea either.

It attacks those who either have power over us, we think have power over us, or think they have power over us.
It is not polite.
It is not necessarily in good taste (because quite often the stuff satire attacks is not in good taste either).
I think satire can often be considered the truth from another angle, not necessarily funny. I find the idea of Bush and Blair being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize quite satirical in itself, but I'm not sure if I find it funny.
I don't think satire has much of a direct effect on politics, I think it may be part of the general loss of interest in politics and the 'they're all as bad as each other' feeling but it's part of a drip drip thing. If satire had an effect then major wouldn't have won the election in the early 90s.
Must... stop... rambling...

One of my english teachers once described satire as "Saturday Night Live, but usually funnier and smarter".

I think satire is underrated. The presence of good satire is a fair indicator of the level of free speech you have. Its usually loathed and dismissed by politicians so its got to be a good thing.

I must confess that I've never been clear on the definition of satire myself. Although, on a side note, I have only once heard a good definition for 'irony':
"A bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash." Garland Green (Steve Buscemi) Con Air.

Satire and irony are two words that everybody (who isn't a moron) knows the meaning of perfectly well .. but doing a definition of them is near impossible .. like 'is' or 'the'..

Would you then agree that the ironic thing about the Alanis Morrisette song of the same title was that none of the listed events were ironic? But you are incapable of giving a thorough explaination as to why this is?

I must admit I've just looked irony up in the dictionary and it says something along the lines (I'm tired and drunk) of expressing an opinion using it's opposite. Therefore, it's not fucking ironic if it rains on your wedding day, only if someone comments how nice it is that the weather complements the proceedings (though knowing some couples I'm not even sure if that qualifies). However, if Alanis Morisette hadn't gone down on that man in the theatre she would have never lasted long enough to show a misunderstanding of language.

Yeah, but the point is that listing a whole lot of things that aren't ironic, and then saying over and over again how ironic they are, is ironic - because if they're not ironic, calling them ironic is the opposite of what you really mean. Depending on how smart you think whoever wrote the song is, it could be a pretty subtle critique of Americans who think irony is a grunge-related fashion trend. Or not.

In which case, our lambasting of the song for displaying a complete ignorance of what constitutes irony would iself be ironic.

Interesting...
