Damn, if only you lot had paid attention when I flagged the Greenwich Satire Week thing back in the day you could have come along and seen a bunch of much fatter people who had no firm idea either.
It attacks those who either have power over us, we think have power over us, or think they have power over us.
It is not polite.
It is not necessarily in good taste (because quite often the stuff satire attacks is not in good taste either).
I think satire can often be considered the truth from another angle, not necessarily funny. I find the idea of Bush and Blair being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize quite satirical in itself, but I'm not sure if I find it funny.
I don't think satire has much of a direct effect on politics, I think it may be part of the general loss of interest in politics and the 'they're all as bad as each other' feeling but it's part of a drip drip thing. If satire had an effect then major wouldn't have won the election in the early 90s.
