Shouldn't this be in the Switchboard?

Or do you want it to stay here for the most attention?

Florida Orange Juice spokeswoman Anita Bryant got nailed for homophobia back in 1977.

I mean, really nailed.

There's more on that story here.

quote:Bryant, a washed up beauty queen, was the head of Save Our Children which she claimed did God's will by protecting children from dangerous, predatory homosexuals. Following the repeal of a recently-passed Miami gay rights law, Bryant advocated the death penalty for sexual heretics and was galvanizing a national agenda to outlaw and eradicate queers.

The struggle for gay rights in Florida is long and, like most other things down here, really pretty twisted.

The Anita Bryant affair apparently had a galvanising effect on Armistead Maupin...

not to be branded as evil right wing bastard, but single parents generally cant adopt either.
Now, if we follow single parent to mean unmarried, and you still can not be legally married if you are gay, than all the ban is doing is continuing the practice of no single parent adoptions, at least as far as the law is concerened.

Now, i dont agree with either of the rules i stated above, I think gays should get married and i think single parents should generally be allowed to adopt, but i think people are focusing on the wrong issues.

...single parents can't adopt generally due to income restraints and having schedule restraints due to work, etc. I know a single woman who adopted without much difficulty but she's in a decent tax bracket and works for the federal government. Plus she generated a plausible environment for the kid to grow.

It kind of makes sense in a few ways (regarding general restrictions), but I'm sorry for those who want to adopt and cannot when they are obviously fit to be a parent. I mean, that's what it's all about...isn't it? God forbid that a child's future guardian may be gay, not rich, or be interested in a non-WASP lifestyle...

This isn't entirely true. After a particularly nasty and complex divorce or family breakup or other disaster, or the deaths or desertion of the biological parents, it's common for a single relative to take in a child who needs a stable home, and eventually be allowed adoption rights. That's what critical here. And there is such a tremendous shortage of people willing or able to deal with foster children and older children in need of adoption, that single persons are regularly allowed to take in these young persons. So this law is, quite simply, criminal.

Yeah, there are a lot of gay fosters here in FL dying to adopt, but unable. in fact, they're not even supposed to be able to foster under the law.
my intended, she's a social worker, and feels strongly about the subject - but won't sign the petition out of (well-placed) fear for her job.

I'm on the American Family Association's mailing list (365 days of entertainment and scary emails). This is what they sent meyesterday regarding this issue.

Scary scary people out there: "Wildmon said he understood that the plight of children in the foster care system was a difficult and sometimes tragic one. "But you should fix the system and not make it worse," he said. "You don't cure that social ill by tearing down the institution of family even further by normalizing homosexual relationships. Children do better in a loving environment with a married mom and dad. Period."

Well, seeing as both Bush children have been seen drinking in public underage and trying to use their Dads position to either get more booze or hush it up, all I can say is thank fuck they weren't brought up by two poofs or who knows what they'd be doing by now!
