Too ignorant to be allowed a CD player

That would be me.

I'm trying to get hold of the Ave Maria, which I think is by Schubert. I believe they used it in an ep of the West Wing. It's gorgeous.

Problem is, every bastard who wrote music wrote a piece by that name. You get 213 hits on Amazon.co.uk alone, and half of them are Bach, then there's Handel...

Save me. What's the work called, what's a decent recording? It's driving me insane.

I believe the Ave Maria in the westwing was sung by Charlotte Church.

Okay, but is it a standalone work? And is there a recording which is more highly rated - I love the West Wing, but I prefer Fournier to Ma, for example.

What's a CD player? Isn't that how people listened to music before iPods?

In my artist's way book, it says for one of the exercises to listen to a whole side of an album...

Don't know if it's a stand alone work but in conversation, "Ave Maria" means just what you're after. Someone, who would know, described to me Church as a very talented girl, but a girl with the voice of a girl nonetheless. Maybe there are other, better versions.

God, that's a good episode.

Schubert's Ave Maria is his opus 52 number 6 (also known as D839 and Ellen's Gesang III). It's his most popular work and has apparently been recorded hundreds of times.
According to one of the West Wing sites, that version is Marian Anderson singing in a 1939 recording. Quite possibly the same one here.

Hope that's of help, Nick.

I think it depends on what episode. The westwing site I went to said it was charlotte church and Im pretty sure they've used Ave Maria in more than one eps.

That's quite possible Keggers. The site I linked to is referring to Ep 5 of Season 1 - The Crackpots and These Women - the one where it features most prominently.

....not that I'm claiming that the information on 'Bartlet4America.org' is indisputable, I hasten to add.

Bless you for that.

And by the way, the reason that loads of composers wrote a piece called that is because its a set part of a religious service - a bit like the way that every requiem has a "dies irae" for example...

Well yes because Ave Maria is the Hail Mary. It's basically just a hymn to the mother of Christ.
