Put Down the Plackard, War Criminal!

WIRED 10.4 (April 2002: Put Down the Gun)

quote:Imagine the scale of belligerence as a slider bar: The cool blue end starts with protests, rioting, and espionage, moving up to organized crime, infowar, narcoterror, and low-intensity special operations. In the middle lies conventional warfare: anything done openly by national armed services wearing uniforms. The red-hot terminus represents weapons of mass destruction: nukes, sarin, anthrax.

Besides hijacking narcoterror and deftly placing any protest in the theatre of war, Sterling spends most of the article pimping various information and space based military hardware (the kind that looks cool on paper but doesn't yet exist.)

and closes thus:

quote: Anybody who threatens the world with a nuke will be redefined as a war criminal and a suicidal pariah. The Special Forces will drop out of the sky to haul every rocket scientist into global military court. Then people wearing blue helmets will scour industries throughout the offending regime and remove anything that looks dangerous, frominsecticide to poppy fields. These are the victory conditions of the dawning Pax Americana.

I suppose I wonder how that's substantively different from our present and why it's good; "redefined," "pariah," "Pax Americana." Shit.

Link for that?

Sounds interesting. I'm always a bit suspicious of Sterling, but his journalism is usually still worth reading.

Link? The Wired site lags two months behind the print issues. Suffice to say, he's the same flag-waving Texas hick he's ever been.

Did Bush's rejection of the '72 ABM treaty inspire no condemnation at all?

Isn't it odd that even though apparently:
quote:Anybody who threatens the world with a nuke will be redefined as a war criminal and a suicidal pariah.

Bush is still around days after threatening the world with nukes?
