Once upon a time I would have been unsure as to how a RZA beat and a Jigga vocal would fit, but if you imagine Jay-Z rapping over 'Pinky Ring (Uzi)' it all makes sense... Still, can't have everything.
The key to his best work seems to be feeling hungry, for want of a better term. The Blueprint was clearly the work of someone who felt they had not been given the credit they deserved - its sequel (which had little in common except the name) was a bloated, self-indulgent record in comparison... But now he's stripping it down again.
Also, if you consider his last three prominent guest verses - 'Crazy In Love', 'Frontin'', and 'Flip Flop Rock' - then if you ask me he's on the best form he's ever been. If he can sustain that on this record, it'll be a classic. |
