He's said he's going to retire after "this album" around the time of release of every album... It's almost endearing.

Having said that, I am excited about The Black Album, and not only because the pattern with Jay-Z's releases seems to go 'good album > bad album > good album > bad album' and we're due a good one next. The self-proclaimed philosophy behind the record is a dozen tracks, by a dozen of the best producers: crucially, in theory this means "no filler". This isn't just a good idea for Jay-Z to embrace: it's an entire that hip-hop could do with embracing in general...

Too bad he couldn't get the RZA to do a track.

Or, going out on a limb, DFA.

Getting totally perverse now: R.E.M.!

I hope that he's not actually retiring. He's so damn good now, and I'd be sad if there were no new records from him. While it is nice to quit while one is ahead, it's kinda worse for a major talent to grow complacent and stop working when there's still so many possibilities for where his talent can take him. It is not impossible to imagine him putting out top notch records into his 60s. Just because no one else in hip hop has ever done that, doesn't mean he shouldn't be the first to try.

Once upon a time I would have been unsure as to how a RZA beat and a Jigga vocal would fit, but if you imagine Jay-Z rapping over 'Pinky Ring (Uzi)' it all makes sense... Still, can't have everything.

The key to his best work seems to be feeling hungry, for want of a better term. The Blueprint was clearly the work of someone who felt they had not been given the credit they deserved - its sequel (which had little in common except the name) was a bloated, self-indulgent record in comparison... But now he's stripping it down again.

Also, if you consider his last three prominent guest verses - 'Crazy In Love', 'Frontin'', and 'Flip Flop Rock' - then if you ask me he's on the best form he's ever been. If he can sustain that on this record, it'll be a classic.
