...top computer and tell me if I can buy batteries cheaper than the manufacturers sell them. It's a Dell Latitude CPi 366X something or other, and the battery only gives me about half an hour worktime, leading me to suspect that it is, in fact, jiggered. Dell flog these things at a huge price, probably more than the lap-top is actually worth, so I wondered if I can get them cheaper anywhere?

My battery is nashed also and so is the power cord which makes it very annoying when I'm trying to watch my porn...

Not sure about buying a new one but have you tried re-conditioning the battery, someone has told me to do that but I can't due to the cord problem but if you go into the bios and try it you might get your battery working as good as new for awhile.

Bear, I have no idea what any of that means, but if you could explain I would be eternally grateful.

I've never done it myself but if you go into your laptops bios when it starts to boot up (usually one of F keys, F10 maybe) there might be an option to recondition the battery which basically just charges the battery fully and then wipes it then charges again which is meant to make the battery last longer - failing that there's always ebay seems to be quite a few Dell batteries on there...

Call Dell, wave your NUJ card, make a stink. "I cannot work under these conditions? Do you imagine this is an acceptable level of durability and usability? Are you trying to tell me that I've got to pay for a new battery because the old one isn't fit for the task it's intended for?"

That last one's my mother's favourite. She uses it like a bludgeon.

Cock tease. Talk about misleading thread titles and life's crushing disappointments...

You can "cycle" the battery. Uncharge completely (possible option in BIOS as Bear says) then fully charge three times in a row.

It probably won't work though. Better of trying to make a new one.

Xoc, I thought you were offering Sax advice: call Dell and cock tease. I was fascinated. I knew about ULCCs, but not Direct Order Computers.

But I have no idea what this "bios" thing is! Ah'm afraid ah'm just a simple townie boy from up north.

*flutters eyelashes* Can someone show me what to do?

*bares arse* please?

Well, I think I've maybe got a battery you could probably have cheap, which is for a similar model Dell. What serial number is your battery?

Otherwise, Morgan sell cheap batteries, and there is, as has been suggested, always eBay.

Haus, can you say that again while glancing suspiciously in each direction and sucking on a Craven A?

I'm now going to look at the serial number of my battery, which is the hi-tech version of looking at your watch while holding a glass of Mateus Rose, so excuse me if I sudd

McGill online are usually good for cheap Dell bits. Including batteries, hard drives and plugs.

Good lord, hard drives, plugs... I'm going to have to log off and go take a cold bath. Maybe I have a pituitary tumour or something.

You're a very silly man.

You're supposed to get a YoghurtWire Cable for that.
