I don't think there should be a universal rule for locking threads, however in this case I think the continued use of offensive terms, deliberatly alienating slang and broad and misguided references to other members' sexualities begs the question, do we want this guy doing as he pleases in our space? Maybe it's not necessary to call the bouncer, but any sensible bartender would refuse him more drinks for now.

I, for one, would like clearer guidelines on when we lock threads. Should we lock a thread for being offensive? I am happy to go with the consensus here, but my understanding was that we aim to avoid offense and have a modicum of civility. I'm thick skinned enough that I could stand having this kind of thread persist, but I can't say that I am sorry to see it stopped either.

In this case, I think the topic starter could have avoided the locks by simply modifying their language a little. Given that they are *new*, this doesn't seem like a great deal to have asked.

And his newness is part of the context. If there were universal guidelines, they would have to take into account every possible context, and that would be hard. Unless one could draw up aa enormous chart, a kind of ethical matrix, I don't see how it could be done without either:

1. The rules being applied to "innocents."
2. Miscreants playing the system.
