an even more cynical view, with a fair chunk of historical supporting evidence, is that the US 'peace' mission will be about forcing concessions from the Palestinians and maintaining uncritical support for Israel in everything but some minor rhetorical flourishes.

Yeah, if Bush gets Sharon on his side then... I don't like to think about that particular "then".
Face it, the guy's on a crusade. The whole situation is fucked.
(My personal opinion? A recognised state of Palestine. Which is apparently now on the cards. Which is weird, but good.)
Don't get me wrong- I don't think terrorism or the killing of civilians is a good thing (though I did always have kind of a crush on Leila Khaled)- but- after each IRA bombing, did the English government go in and blow fuck out of Northern Ireland?
(Well, okay, to a limited extent- if we discount Bloody Sunday, because according to a hell of a lot of people, I'm WRONG in thinking that EVER ACTUALLY HAPPENED. And probably a communist too. And a complete bastard.), and only a couple of times, but the point still stands.

The US may criticize the Israeli govt from time to time, but despite even the harshest of warnings from Cheney, Powell, etc., Israel remains the #1 importer of US weapons in the world. If the US (and the UN) were serious about the violence, then there would be an arms boycott on the region, which is something that should have happened a long time ago. Mind you, that's an arms boycott for both sides...I just have a bad feeling about how this is all going to turn out.

Look at the Iran/Iraq war of the 80's: everybody (US, UK, France, Russia, China, etc.) was selling arms to BOTH sides in that one, and chemical weapons were most definitely used as well. (By Iraq against Iran I think.) I'm not saying it will get to that point, but let's face it, war is BIG business, and the conflict now has all the trappings of a war.

Also, I'm sure the US would like to see an independent Palestine that could be controlled as a further foothold in the region, but how many Palestinians would go for that? Or Israelis for that matter? And isn't the backing of the US for a Palestinian state a continuance of the old British policy in the region of "divide and conquer"? (As in an attempt to derail the growth of Islamic fundamentalism amongst Palestinians and maybe also to help keep the Israelis in check.)Sometimes it seems as though the world really is giant game of "Risk".

Was chatting about this over lunch with one of my housemates today as we watched some political discussion program... It was pointed out that while Iraq has violated many UN resolutions Israel has violated every UN resolution passed against it too. yet guess which one is under the threat of bombing and/ or invasion by US forces...

BTW Has everyone or indeed anyone read Joe Sacco's comic Palestine? a documentary comic of his time spent as a photo journalist in the occupied territories- what did you all think? fantastic historical resource and tinroduction to thew conflict or outragous propaganda?

I've seen it, it looks to be well-done and informative, not to mention the fact that the guy risked his life going there (I think it was done during the first Intifada of the late 80's, but it was just re-released with a new intro. A local arts 'zine here just did an article/interview with him, I'll see if I can find it). He also did one on Bosnia, but I can't recall the title.

Israel bans TV crews from filming army raids
Footage makes military look bad, official says
Sandro Contenta
MIDDLE EAST BUREAU

JERUSALEM — Israel's defence minister has ordered the army to stop allowing television crews to follow soldiers during raids of Palestinian communities because the images hurt the army's reputation.

Binyamin Ben-Eliezer issued the order after Israel's private Channel 2 television network broadcast shocking footage of soldiers using explosives to storm into the home of a refugee family in Bethlehem.

The soldiers proceeded to tear down a wall, shouting at family members to shut up, while frightened Palestinian children choked back tears and watched their mortally wounded mother lying on the floor. She later died after an ambulance was delayed by an Israeli army checkpoint.
