I saw this godforsaken animal on television last night and now here it is Barbelith, the first cloned house cat
check out this link we'refucked

Um, hasn't CC been around for a couple of years now?

nowthink, whilst cloning technology does raise a number of ethical concerns, I really don't think anyone's going to be able to recreate the TMNT anytime soon. Copycat, like Dolly the sheep, uses genetic material from a single animal, and even that doesn't work at all well. Creating an all-singing, all pizza-ordering ninja reptile would be rather more complex and thus even less likely to succeed.

well, in a literal sense no, ninja turtles are a stretch, but c'mon..
The one in eighty-seven success rate is comparable to that reported with cloned sheep and cows. Genetic tests confirm that the kitten, now two months old, is indeed a genetic copy of the original calico cell donor. Interestingly, the kitten does not have the same coloring as the genetic parent, a fact the researchers attribute to the play of dueling X chromosomes and developmental factors outside the control of the nucleic DNA

The kitten's not even the same damn color as the original!
there's just too many unknowns, read; x-factors, to not work to try and stop this madness.

get it-'x-factors', X-men? Mutants?
or am I just too obvious for the prevailing sentiment on this board.

Ah don't worry about it, when they come looking for mutants they'll go to Rage's board...

Well, no, I didn't seriously belive that you were talking about turtles.

What you do seem to be saying is that genetic damage from the cloning process could result in unforseen mutations. Right there with you. But the most likely result of this genetic damage isn't going to be Fang, The Mutant Kitten That Ate London. I'll be a dead cat.

The kittens not the same color because in a female cat one sex chromosome folds itself up and the other one is displayed and coloring just happens to be on the x chromosome so since it's genetic parent had two different coloring schemes resulting from some of her skin cells displaying one of her physical traits and others displaying the other genetic trait the kitten should have the same thing happen but not necessarily in the same pattern. Its basic genetics Duh. It should be really clear that on the cloning forefront the Oh fuck! level is when mass cloning, (say fifty of the same cats) starts to occur. cloning on cat or dog for rich twits is frivilous but not horrible. Genetically modified food crops however passed the Oh fuck! mark several years ago with that pollen that was toxic to butterflies. if you want something to worry about needlessly.

Its basic genetics Duh

so by this you mean to say that you're an expert on genetics?
if so-forgive my ignorance, however,ya'll are leaving out one important factor, who says mass cloning has to stop at cattle and domesticated animals and lab rats? furthermore, who says science can't justify cross breeding with the human genome and such and such ad infinitum..

I used the teenage mutant ninja turtles as a ridiculous example to spark the discussion, but make no mistake. science fiction becomes reality in this world whether you choose to believe it or not.
Honestly, do you think Marquis De Sade and Frederick Douglass were concerned with Mars Space probes back in the day?

Possibly the Duh was a little harsh, but level of information needed to understand why CC looks different to her mum would probably be avaliable in a highschool biology textbook.

No, in theory, mass cloning doesn't have to stop with lab rats or sheep. However, there's one crucial fact you're overlooking: current cloning technology is frankly a bit crap. For every successful clone, there are countless non-viable embryos. Even Dolly, held up as a success, was badly messed up at a genetic level. The resulting health problems were so severe, she had to be put down. Human cloning is a long way away.

(Off topic, but does anyone know if those Raelian nutters are still claiming to have cloned human babies? I can't recall offhand.)

Donatello. I think that kitty looks cute. Australian artist Patricia Piccinini has been busy in this regard. Her dog people from We Are Family are creepy but sort of cute (how could they not be?), and her new work, Sandman, looks at first glance like an updating of The Little Mermaid.

According to some people cloning has already started during WWII!!! I don't believe that long one myself!!!! I don't think that it is right to meddle with Mother Nature's ways - it's asking for trouble. That cloned sheep at Roslin Institue didn't last long did it??!!! I'm thinking "Vurt" here (y'know the dog-people and that???!!!!). I believe in propelling ourselves towards a futuristic and more positve society but sometimes there are a lot of un-needed crap that goes on in the scientific world - I saw the new Scorpion soldier that NATO have r & d'd (no doubt at a top secret desert location) - let's face it, the world is a huge fucking joke on a huge macro level. Science in its extreme is undoing reason.....

The first African wildcat has just been cloned here in the Big Easy. Here's the site which announces it (lots of cute pictures): http://www.auduboninstitute.org/rcenter/res_cloning.htm
Apparently, my cat's vet was somehow involved in this. I'm told she's considered the best cat vet in the city.
