Merry Crowleymas!

Yep, it's the lovable Mr. Crowley's birthday. How many butt smacks would he be getting today?..ya know, if he were alive?

Anyway, you can give the old (and cold) Beast a head's up on this special occassion, or criticise the dead misogynist, (I do not care either way). But do tell us all how you will spend the day that marks the birth of one of the world's greatest occultists. Add any interesting trivia regarding Crowley as well.

**Did you know that Aleister was born with 4 signs of a Buddha?**

My question: Can someone tell me if he was born in Leamington or Warwickshire, I have some opposing data here.

(Note:I would like to thank Count Anton for the word "Crowleymas" also. If it has been used before I saw him use it, I don't know, but it rocks!)

Ah, Crowleymas. A date that actually put me off magick for many years, just as I was getting into it. Long, boring story, which I'll relate later if anyone can be arsed, but it involved my first dabblings with the Tarot, with sigils, and my house falling in on me (in a literal sense) to the accompaniment of C93's "Crowleymass Unveiled"- a joke song, but one which somehow became the catalyst for a whole bunch of weird shit. Which, I only found out later, actually occurred on Crowleymas itself.

A cold October morning
A wretched October day
No sound of sleigh-bells in the wind
Christmas is far away

Merry Crowleymas, everyone!

WEIRD. I just heard "Crowleymass Unveiled" for the first time, randomly, yesterday (the version off "Island" with H.O.H.)

Groovy

I will celebrate by doing my will, HO HO HO

The local OTO body is getting together today for a potluck dinner...but I'll just settle on a nice bike ride with my wife.
I might tip a glass in his memory...but I'm more concerned with celebrating his Greater Feast (the day he died) with is December 1st. Alas, I can't think of any cute terms for that day...except maybe "Beaster."

So... as a matter of curiosity, what are the four or more signs of being "born a Buddha"?

Completely unaware of the significance of this date, I've spend both today and yesterday reading extensively about Crowley and his various chums.

Bloody synchronicity.

As far as I'm aware May it's Leamington. There's no official blue plaque or anything, but it's the little royal spa town in Warwickshire that is his birth place.

Which I had know earlier, could of taken a train over there and done some kind of dedication. Hey, no matter what you think of the man, every little helps.

Beaster?

BWAHAHAHAHA!

I happened to stumble across this little test for Thelemites, which I haven't tried to score on yet, but it seems a l i t t l e too overzealous with the Crowley-worship, IMO.

Funny, I was unaware of the date. I spent it in an oddly appropriate way. While visiting a friend who has a 2 year old, I saw a card on the floor that looked like a tarot card. Right size and shape, with a funky patternon the back. It had a picture of 6 pig's heads and the number 6, to which I laughed and showed it saying, "look, its the 6 of pigs!" Turns out its a part of a flash card set for kids to learn numbers and such, but the tarot reference got us talking about doing a Fisher Price tarot set, like Tarot for kids. This inevitably led to discussions of the major arcana, and the realization that the best implementation would likely be an existing kids alphabet set. Lookie, its the English Quaballa already mapped out as major arcana! It slipped right by us all this time.

So yea, I basicly spent the day causing Al's ghost to kick himself for missing the obvious, I guess.

Ah yes... the signs of a Buddha, almost forgot. Conveniently, this paragraph also answered my other question about his birthplace. And whoops!, apparently he only had three, not four signs. Of course, there are really more than three or four in Buddhism, probably 108.

"Aleister Crowley was born Edward Alexander Crowley in Leamington, Warwickshire. In his autobiography Crowley claimed he was "remarkable from the moment of his birth. He bore on his body the three most important distinguishing marks of a Buddha. He was tongue-tied, and on the second day of his incarnation a surgeon cut the fraenum linguae. He had also the characteristic membrane, which necessitated an operation for phimosis three lustres later. Lastly, he had upon the centre of his heart four hairs curling from left to right in the exact form of a Swastika." (from The Confessions of Aleister Crowley, 1929-30) "

That Thelimic test is one of the stupidist things I've seen in a long time, as it only tests whether a person matches to what their preconceptions of a Thelemite is. So of course I answered every single answer "correctly."

Oh well....

Seems I number one among several who celebrate something called Chaosmas which has nothing to do with Crowleymas. I only mention, 'cause one of the dates of Chaosmas is Oct 11 (yesterday), the next one comes up Dec 23 (every seventy-three days - Chaosmas Cheer five times a year).

Ah yes, that Crowleymas. What weird days they were. Still, it all worked out in the end, even if I did end up drinking a whole bottle of vodka that night, pretty much unaccompainied, thanks to the dratted ceiling. I didn't listen to Ísland for years after that, and still don't own a copy, just in case something untoward happened involving the roof while it was playing.

I think that's my only superstition.

My scheduled night of gin and Blue Velvet on the bigscreen will now have a nice new excuse. If the Lynch and the work fo the fine Stillman LTD effort weren't enough.

Despite everything else, or rather, with everything else, I always thought Magick Without Tears a fine thing to put down to paper.

Fine book, that Magick without Tears. Although, I do remember the first time I read it as Magick Without tears, which is something entirely different.

Wow, I'd forgotten all about Crowleymas this year. I guess most of my attention has been on setting up our ancestor altar for Samhain/Halloween/La Dia de los Muertos/what have you. But I'm sure Al would appreciate all the time I've spent studying today--Susan Greenwood's The Nature of Magic, actually.

So, with only an hour of Crowleymas left to celebrate (California, mind you), I'm about ready for bed -- perhaps I'll toast him with a whiff of the Herb Dangerous.

Although I'm not a Thelemite, I do have a lot of respect for the old guy. I've been thinking about putting a photo of him up on our Samhain altar, as a sort of spiritual ancestor for so many of us...

I'm kind of glad I didn't notice it this year- my ceiling caving in AGAIN a couple of Halloweens ago has left me a little wary of ceilings in general, so to realise the dare would have had me terrified.

The only reason I remember this date so well, is that it is the date that I took acid for the first time, (twenty-three years ago, now). That night I also became a Satanist and was introduced to both LaVey and Crowley's work. At the time, I had no idea that it was Crowley's b-day.

That same year I had a very life-altering experience on the Hallowe'en. It wasn't a very nice experience, but it changed me forever. Thus, I am vigilant during this time, between Oct. 12th and Oct. 31st...actually, Nov. 1st.
