Camp art

Guardian

Two handcuffed prisoners in orange overalls kneel in the compound of Camp X-Ray. They can see and hear nothing. One slumps back on his heels as an armed guard keeps watch.

To their left is the interrogation centre, behind them a watchtower with machine gun in place. The fences are high and a stiff autumn breeze blows through the barbed wire, fluttering the US flag.

Beyond the compound is a pub, a battered betting shop and a burger van whose owner may be surprised to find that a little corner of Cuba has been recreated on waste land in Hulme, a mile from the centre of Manchester.

I'm interested in audience reactions to this. Could be a bit Stanford Prison Experiment if it lasted longer, depending on how scripted the whole thing is.

Not quite sure about the article's title, "Guantanamo Bay prison recreated as northern art" - is there something specific called "northern art" now?

(Is it bad protocol to start a topic on something you've blogged? Well, I thought someone might appreciate this.)

Stanford Prison? That was the thing they had to shut down because the 'guards' were having too much fun picking on the 'inmates' yes? A couple of friends of mine are taking part in it, apparently their interogations are going to be broadcast on local radio. It'll be interesting.

Holy crap! Well, keep us posted. I wonder if the "guards" and "detainees" will behave any differently now that the SPE and "Das Experiment" are more or less public knowledge.

i think it's a great idea. everyone on telly interviewed said, "why's it in Manchester?", which rather illustrates the point that (IMHO) is being made, that Camp X-Ray is closer to home than we like to think, metaphorically-speaking.

Agreed. In terms of execution, from the initial media coverage I thought the whole thing looked fairly amateurish - cheap looking and small scale. However, I went past it early this morning on the way to work, and saw a 'guard' walking in front of a row of kneeling 'prisoners' and the effect was pretty chilling.
