What's happened to Vicki Fowler's American accent in EastEnders?

I mean, I know she's been living in Walford for a bit now, but even so... do accents just go like that, to be replaced with something that veers between Estuary English and slightly-posh-bird?

looms out of shadows, puffing on a ciggie

Watch it, sunshine.

Don't you go poking yer bugle in that girl's business.

Or you and me will aff to av words, my son.

She's family, see?

That makes it my business.

And just cos I'm getting on a bit, doesn't mean you want to go starting any bovver.

Understand?

That would be the stage school accent.

It is quite funny I missed the episode but my mate said they did address it, Vicki told Sharon that's she's been living in London long enough to start talking like a Londoner...

Soon we'll all forget about that horrible American accent..

To be replaced by an authentic mockney accent.

Been enjoying Eastenders of late. Only real problem with the return of Den: too much Sharon.

Sorry, but Yick!

Obviously they decided Vicky sounded like a complete twat with that dreadful American accent, but really, you can't just change it from one episode to the next.

And on the subject of Den(ish)...

Eastenders Top Trumps - Den Watts or Phil Mitchell?

Surely Den on every level.

Den, every time. For my money, the Mitchells and Steve WhatsisfacefromSpandauBallet are all just Den diluted with Hennarty (from 'The Bureau' in The Day Today).
Phil may be a big lad, but for all his much-vaunted hard man status, he strikes me as somewhat out of shape.

You're 'avin a giraffe incha? Phil "unstoppable juggernaut of death" Mitchell would bite off old man Watt's head and piss down the hole. Well, he won't as we all know he's due to leave soon, but, you know. He would if he wasn't having to keep on the nice-nice for 'er indoors.

Nah, bear - Sharon said something about how travelling around Europe had changed Vicky's accent. At which point a beautiful arc of coffee shot across the room from my gob.

But do any of us honestly prefer Vicky's mockney? I just want her to keep her mouth shut all. the. time.

Nah, Phil's on his way out - point was hammered home when Dennis floored him. It's a case of out with the old and in with the... er... really old.

Slightly off-topic, but what was with (wee) Dennis and Sharon? Did they fuck? I thought incest would be slightly off-bounds of half-7 viewing.

In theory, Den is better than phil, in his havoc causing. But in a fight, Phil could floor the old geeza. *just reads end of boboss' post* Oh. Maybe not. But maybe Phils gonna be working out more from now on.

Ah, but she's only his adopted sister. Royal Tenenbaums shout-out? Maybe.

(Incidentally, I like the fact that Sharon doesn't want Den to go back to his old bad guy ways, but his two children by blood are keen for him to embrace the dark side once more - the Watts genetic code makes for bad seeds, do you see?)

It's a challenge to distinguish between the two Dens in writing. I propose we refer to the one who floored Phil (but got the shit kicked out of him by Phil and his mates later) as Young Den. Leslie Grantham's character is, of course, Old Den, or more accurarely Ol' Dirty Den.

Ah yes but the blood children didn't see his evil treatment of dear old Ang. He drove her to drink you know.

Actually, it appears that the distinction the Eastenders Gods have made between the young and old Dens, is that Old Den is referred to in the main as just 'Den', whereas young Den is referred to specifically by Sharon and Vicki as 'Dennis'. Which does grate slightly, only I'm not sure why.

But do any of us honestly prefer Vicky's mockney? I just want her to keep her mouth shut all. the. time.
Well yes, there is that. But really I wish she would just GO AWAY. Altogether.

the den/dennis stuff is a whole new dimension for soaps no? mucho of the incidental dialogue floating around from ian, dot and others has an ambiguity that i've never really got from the square or any show before. if soaps were more like (my) life they'd be chocca with characters called ben matt and dan.

but pat's really ranking me out with all the bottom-lipsucking and smouldering looks she keeps shooting at den's arse. really makes me feel creepy.

And Spiradon. Don't forget Spiradon.

Personally I find Dennis just as irritating as Vicky, although I understand he might possess a degree of sex appeal.

The thing is, I like my Eastenders good and irritating.
