So, I have this super-fast connection now and I'm wondering, like many have wondered before me, where are the best sites for downloading free music. I want no hassle, no subscription: just type the name of the artist/song and download.
It's a tall order, maybe, but there's bound to be something out there.
I'll start the ball rolling: http://napalm.ftpz.us, a searchable directory of FTP sites sharing music, films etc. The only problem is it's a little unstable.

Not a site per se but more free downloads from a bad I think everyone should try:

http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/523/solanoiduk.html

Check "Haddonfield".

My favourite site in the world ever! Is www.shuffletown.nl lots of stuff on there basically people just search for dexes on servers, best place to go is to the Stairway to Heaven link which is a searchable forum updated all the time and if your looking for something you can post and people will help you out (their nice folks)

Give it a try.

700 free songs, anyone?
Old thread is made useful by the release of this year's SXSW big bag o'free music totally legal and torrented. Yeah, there's a lot of poo in there, but there's some gems, too (free Gogol Bordello? c'mon, give it a whirl).

if you like it a little different, The Wire magazine has an mp3 library which changes semi-regularly. Its not searchable, but it is free. Great site if you're in the mood for it.

Soulseek is good for downloading music.

I think IndieTorrents is best one out there, but the problem is: you need to receive an invite in order to use it. Just go on random music message boards and ask if anyone have invites to give away.

Vitaminic is a good site for all kinds of music. It´s down for the moment, though.

And Salon has a daily download, often with wellknown artists.

Thanks for those links...

I'd recommmend epitonic , it's free, legal, and it's got a decent range of a few songs from a lot of good artists across a pretty hefty swathe of genres.

I've mentioned this before but you really can't go wrong with ECBrown.

Never ending legal genius - Shooby Taylor, Tom Waits, Beefheart, a full catalouge of Cajun tunes and a huge range of different genres.

This page has kept me coming back for months and is the sole reason I have a download manager installed.

The man also has his own tunes for download and has a label devoted to recordings related to Kali.

I downloaded absolutely loads of stuff from Epitonic a few months ago, then revisited it recently only to find that the site had been redesigned and, although all the same artists/tunes were on there, the downloads no longer seemed to work for me... particularly annoying as i had to delete a load of the stuff i downloaded before, to make room on my pitifully small hard drive, but had since cleared some space and was intending to download the same tunes again...

There are, however, some very nice tunes available free (albeit in very low bitrate mp3) at discs.da.ru...

I absolutely love some of that Kali stuff... especially the first track from that film soundtrack - it sounds like Doctor Who goes to Bollywood...
