New Hip Hop - what's up?

It's occured to me I haven't heard any decent new hip hop for a while so I thought I'd ask you lot - so what's new, schmoo? I'm still listening to the Lewis Parker LP and trying to get over the Ali G voices (bwwwooooyy). Not heard anything else. What do I need to hear?

Last hip hop album I bought was Dalek's From Filthy Tongue of Gods and Griots. When it sticks to hip hop it's solid, grimy and vibey. When it veers into spoken word it's a bit dodge. I too would like some decent recommendations, but I honestly can't spare the cash or the effort unless it's pretty mindblowing.

yeah, maybe go see the epitonic site.

i also liked this.

i just love the line "Immer hardcore!"
the groups involved are schonheitsfehler and rainbow flave.

i dunno, if you know german it will be a lot better. ist sehr schon, jah? a little gimmicky, i guess, but i think that's the rainbow fellers' influence more than the german guy.

DM + Jemini "Ghetto Pop Life" (Lex Records) is the best damn hip hop album this year. Awesome flow and the tightest production i've heard this year.

Lifesavas "Spirit in Stone" (Quannum) is a really tight album in the spirit of the Blackalicious releases.

Prefuse 73 "One World Extinguisher" and "Extinguished: Outtakes" (Warp Records) On more of a cut up instrumental tip, not a lot of vocals, but it hits really hard and is a production tour de force.

Coming out tomorrow in the states are 3 sure to be greats:
Lyrics Born "Later That Day" (Quannum)
Non-Prophets "Hope" (Lex Records)
Jaylib "Champion Sound" (Stone's Throw)

Maybe I'm just an eternal idiot, but I think that hip hop has entered its Fat Elvis period. Just as mainstream rock had to become dominated by Yes, Queen, and Journey at some point, hip hop has to suffer through its own period of bloated misguided indulgence. Just as within any other musical genre during its years of shame, there exists a viable, rich underground, but it won't be evident until it manages to rise to the surface.

Or maybe I subscribe too much to outdated, cyclical views of pop culture history.

ES: Yeah, I kind of agree with you, but then again, I'm sure if I put in the time resources to dig I'd hear some great stuff.

Keith: I've got that Prefuse LP - forgot about dat. It's f***in' amazing. A mate lent me a Lex sampler which had some nice stuff on it - who was it? Kid Acne had an amazing track on there.

With regard to MF Doom et al, I heard the King Geodrah Lp in a shop, production sounded dope, I may have to invest. Thanks for the reccies!

Ooh! Ooh! Lyrics Born? Is that a full length album? If so I've been waiting for it for fucking ages! Brilliant!

Lifesavas: Saw 'em live earlier in the year with Lateef and Buck 65. They were fun, managed to keep the crowd up for it after a lot of PA troubles, but not one I'd buy.

Divine Styler: I think I got an album of his a while back, but it wasn't my cuppa. Probably went back to the shop. I'd be interested to hear his new stuff, quite like him as an MC.

I heard Prefuse 73's first record and it didn't really do much for me. Is the second much different?

yeah, lyrics born album. it's out, kids, it's out! man, i met this dude once at a quannum show. literally the coolest guy ever.

lifesavas: it's a great album...i'd get it if i were you just for "hellohihey," probably one of the top 5 hip hop songs ever made.

you guys really really really need to get the DM + Jemini album. SERIOUSLY.

prefuse 73: second album is much more hip hop to me...whereas the first one is kind of chill and downtempo...the second one hits a lot harder.

I met Lateef, dude. Let's share a Latyrx fanboy moment. Best crew ever, save Co Flow.

It's out in the UK 13.10.03. I'm gonna sell my ass over the weekend so I can afford it.

Hey! Anyone want my ass?

oh boy. so i got the Oct. 7th triple threat of Jaylib, Non-Prophets, and Lyrics Born. Quick impressions:

1. Non-Prophets - The clear winner. Razor sharp MC and a really funky and soulful producer make this one treasure of an album. It's not better than the DM + Jemini, but it's pretty good follow up for Lex Records.

2. Jaylib - Hard as hell. Madlib and Jay Dee really come with the production on this album. "The Red" is just the baddest motherfucker you'll ever hear. That beat, that bass!

3. Lyrics Born - What an introducing producer. And an interesting MC. Super super funk soul sensational, with maybe a bit too much R+B. I mean, the last blackalicious was my favorite album that year, and still one of my all time favorites, and it was soulful as hell, but it didn't go too far into the R+B territory. LB is kind of going there, and his flows are a better odd on this album. Sometimes he's on, and sometimes he's just weird. Damn cool album, though. I need many repeat listens.

Has anyone heard the new D.O.C. album Deuce? Its been over a decade since I listened to No One... and the review over at all music makes this one sound really lame but for some reason I'm extremely interested...I ran across a copy on SS but I'm stuck in endless que.

Does anyone even know what I'm talking about?

Flyboy bought the new RZA album down on Halloween, and I must say it's superb. Instantly bought all my best memories of Wu-Banging in '95 back to me. Must get it when I have some cash.

Same goes for Lyrics Born. Very smooth, very soul, very danceable.

I got a few new ones...

Swollen Members - Heavy: These guys used to be super dark and dingy, and now they have gone over into more of a commerical upbeat tip...it's different, but just as good. If you like commercial production (like Timbaland, etc.), but think commercials MCs are wack, this is a pretty damn good album for you.

Diverse - One A.M.: Very cool new release on Chocolate Industries, mostly produced by RjD2, with a few Prefuse 73 numbers in there. Lyrics Born, Vast Aire, and Jean Grae (nee What What) guest. Diverse himself is incredibly gifted.

Oh, and that poster that was asking about a Lex sampler, it's called Lexoleum, and has a quite a few great tracks. that Kid Acne one is called "rap dracula." Forgot to answer that...

Viktor Vaughn - new MF Doom's guise - is fucking ace, as was the King Geedorah project.
Tes album 'times 2' was a short but sweet treat.
Busdriver and Radioactive's 'The Weather' is the most fun album since 3 feet High.
Talking of which... re-discovered quite how fucking amazing De La Soul is Dead is. 1991! Still fresh! If you haven't listened to it for a while GO BACK!
