Rumors have been circulating for months of an upcoming "Hush"-style Green Lantern revamp featuring A-list talent. Now the current writer, Ben Raab, has stated that he'll be exiting the book after #175 (current issue is #169), also seeming to confirm the coming revamp with the following comment:

As you've know, DC has big things in the works for GL... My job was to keep the story going for the time being while they get things in order.

Raab's final storyline is assumed to culminate in the founding of a new Green Lantern Corps, setting the stage for the new writer to take the title off in a "cosmic space opera" direction, and Morrison's name is popping up more and more often as that new writer. One poster on the official DC board claims Morrison more or less admitted to being the new writer in an interview. Anyone here heard anything about this?

Don't know anything about it but...

I'm not sure I like the idea.
Green Lantern is a sucky character.
But then Animal Man was suckier before Morrison came on.

I've always thought a Promethia-ish spin on GL might be interesting. I mean here's a guy whose power is fueled purely by will. Get Kyle Rainer readin' books on Thelema and enjoy the fun.

Green Lantern is fucking perfect for Morrison - I've wanted to see him take the reins of a cosmic space opera ever since his interest in Silver Surfer was first announced.

Me too. Starlin/Gerber-esque.

There's loads of great contingent stuff to the GL mythos: the Qwardians, Manx the Sentient City, the Oans, Mosaic, loadsa fuckin weird Corps...

And Morrison did Kyle Rayner pretty good service in JLA, though I generally prefer his extended cast stuff over solo protagonist.

Be good, y'knaa. And if he brings Hal Jordan back, we can invite the entirety of H.E.A.T. to hang out here, lauding our (well, my) fave comic writer.

There are already 3 ring bearers on earth, plus Jade who is sort of one as well. but anyway...

If this turns out to be true I'm gonna be real excited!!!!

That would be freakin cool. I've always loved GL, but I think it's been a long time since anyone came close to using him (any of them, really) to the full potential, although I did really dig the Mosaic series. I'd love to see Grant bring back Ch'p, too.

So besides Kyle and John, who's the third human with the ring? Alan Scott has the magic flame, Hal's the Spectre, and Guy has some strange non-ring powers now, right? Who am I forgetting?

Alan Scott got his ring back in a recent issue of JSA, and took back the name of Green Lantern.

Wouldn't it be great if Grant took over Green Lantern, and the main character was Alan Scott? Everyone expecting the big grand space opera, and it's a more grounded magical guy who fought in WW2.

If I knew who Mogo was, I'm sure I'd have an opinion.

Morrison on GL? I'd buy that for a dollar (or two and a bit).

Love the concept of GL, just don't think anyone's done anything remotely interesting with it in years.

Would be willing to see the still-not-mooted-'cos- we-made-it-up-on this-very-message-board collaboration with Liefeld put on an imaginary back burner if this rumour turned out to be true.

I'd love that, as long as I get to wear the ring...

This would be cool. One thing's for sure, GL needs a new writer & artist badly. Winick's run was pretty strong, the best run the book has had since Ron Marz' respectable run a while back. But Grant Morrison on GL would be a mind-bending wonder! I can't wait to see Grant wreak some more havoc on the DC Universe, whatever characters he works on!

the only Morrison DCU thing I'm fanboyishly waiting for is CAPTAIN MARVEL JR. unless this comes true and has the Space Opera angle. like WARLOCK or that John Byrne character. though "space opera" has "70s" written all over it.

we are such nerds.

I'm only interested if the title character is Guy Gardner.

He's the one true Green Lantern in my book!

No way, Flux. John Stewart has more grit, integrity, and social relevance in his pinky finger than Gardner will ever have. And I would hope that Grant realizes this, as well, or I'm going to boycott the book.

I hate to say this but I was a Hal fan. I liked Kyle enough but the book became just a guy with a super power. If they bring the core back and Grant Morrison writes it I am definatley coming back tho.

His run on Animal Man is one of my all time fave runs on ANY comic.

With Marz signed for six months, I'm assuming either they have BIG plans for the revamp that need to coincide with similiarly big plans in other books (ie. a company-wide crossover late next year--the big project Morrison has discussed that will produce 7 new titles or whatever the figure was), or that they haven't really lined up anything at all and are basically just buying time at this point. If the latter is the case, hopefully the overwhelmingly positive online reaction to this rumor will point them in the right direction.

oh well, if marz is following raab for a few months then i really don't have to be arsed about green lantern for at least a year. i could do with the extra cash, frankly.

From Rich Johnston... the whole story?

"One of the more common rumours doing the rounds over the last fortnight is that John Byrne is doing a Green Lantern project - and so is Grant Morrison.

It transpires that Grant Morrison is writing an arc for the main series, reintroducing Hal Jordan as Earth's Green Lantern, before Geoff Johns takes over the title with Carlos Pacheco. I understand that Morrison has been given the whole of the Green Lantern Corps to play with, save one. And that John Byrne's Green Lantern series will involve John Stewart.

More to come on this one, I'm sure."

Only one arc GM's writing?? Oy!! I wish he was writing more than just one arc. Hopefully it's a long arc (i.e. more than 6 issues). Johns & Pacheco sound like a great team, but I'd much rather see Morrison do long-term work on GL than Johns, who's a decent superhero writer but not amazing.

I dunno, unless I'm just indulging in wishful thinking (not out of the question), Morrison getting "the whole of the Green Lantern Corps to play with, save one" could easily be read as him ending up writing a GLC title as one of the seven new titles he's said will result from his "big DCU project". Johns gets Hal for the main title, Byrne gets John Stewart for his spin-off, Morrison gets Kyle and the new Corps.

As an aside, if the above is true it will be interesting in light of the last ten years of online rancor to see which does better sales-wise, the Morrison-authored Kyle title or the Johns-authored Hal book (it's kind of a no-brainer that the Byrne/Stewart title is doomed to relatively low sales if not cancellation, but the others I predict will do fairly well). I expect they'll be neck and neck at first (particularly with the Johns/Hal title having been given a boost by Morrison's sure-to-be-megahyped reintro) but I'd have to give the edge to Morrison's book in the long run for reasons most here will find fairly obvious.
