Have any of you who bought this tried playing the disks simultaneously? I recommend very highly ripping them and combining the 4 tracks into two, as I think that he intended for it to be really synched. It works really well.

What about burning all four tracks onto four different cds and then playing all four at the same time?

Then you'd have to bounce around as Bucephalus' ball for sure!

Varis 08 - agreed. Not sure what they're talking about in terms of track numbers, but sounds like a lot of fun. Can you clarify, testpattern and bob? If so I'll mix it down onto minidisc tomorrow night.

I meant the two stereo tracks on each disk. The reason I think they sould be ripped and mixed (cooledit works well, because you can open a whole CD as a .wav file), rather than just played simultaneously on two stereos a la Zaireeka is that Mr. Twin's rhythmic textures are so intricate that it should as precise as possible. I really think that this is what he intended the whole damn time--but in his inimitable snarky way, just didn't tell anyone. I seem to remember him vaguely hinting at it in an interview in some lame electronia mag--XLR8 or something, I think.

Aah. In that case I don't have the equipment to really do it justice. Reckon you can burn me a copy? I can send you something cool in return...

Sounds like the sort of thing he'd do. I shall be doing this soon, when I get a spare moment.

You're probably aware of this but the final sound on the track Windowlicker, when viewed through the correct spectral analysis software, produces a picture of his face. Kind of a let down, really when you think he could have coded some naked ladies/animal porn/whatever.

I wasn't aware of that. Interesting.

Always thought the third track on his AFX Men1 CD sounded like it was a data file of some kind, but being about as computer minded as a marmoset, I've never been able to work out if it was or not. Any rabid Aphex nuts got any clues about this?

i've been listening to this album simultaneously since i've seen this thread. it works... i have my cd player running through my pc at home so and they both use the same speakers so i can play them both simultaneously. this shit is so dense its awesome. its definitely the way the album should be listened to.

so hang on... I'm a bit slow.

You take track 1 from cd 1 and 2.

And then

Left1 + Left2 = LeftA
Right1 + Right2 = RightA

????

Track1 CD1 = Left1 and Right1
Track1 CD2 = Left2 and Right2
New Track = LeftA and RightA

I tried this last night but Zaireeka style with 2 cd players and 2was stunned by the result. If this isn't MNEANT to be played this way, then this is just an interesting way to make that CD better, but after listening to more than half of the CDs this way it's difficult to imagine that the are NOT menat to be played this way. Things definitely link up. The 'music' still sounds all glitchy and carzy but the 3D-ness and addition of little bell or piano melodies to some 'songs' makes a difference. ou should try this. If, like me, you bought this[these] cds, this might redeem that ripped-off feeling.

So....has anyone actually tried this? Last night, housebound due to snow, and suddering from a mild case of cabin fever I decided to give this a try. After a few false starts (you can kind of tell when they a synched acceptably) I let it go and once again was pleasantly surprised by the result. I let the CDs play all the way through this time and it's interesting to note that the CDs end within a minute or so of each other. After a while it became difficult to tell what was coming from which players, and part of the fun is mixing it to your liking. I think this is a great way to get people to listen to a whole CD of music (since you can't switch tracks after starting them as far as I can tell) rather than just a few tracks, plus it's an amusing joke on those who reveiwed the album as two separate discs.

i was just wondering if anyone had done this, and if they had, if they might fancy soulseeking it over to me...?

so last night i ripped the CDs and then put the two Track 1s together with Audacity. and it was rubbish. as proof, try playing any two tracks from the album together and see if you notice any difference in the appropriateness of the mix. it's a lovely theory, but i don't buy it.

Well, I have not played random tracks together to check out this theory that anything off the CDs fits together the same, but listening to both of the CDs in synch certainly increases the listening pleasure in what is otherwise a lackluster double CD. I have a friend who is a big Aphex fan and was also skeptical about this until I played him both CDs together. After 10 minutes or so he was stunned by how well it worked (as was I). Finally, just as ripping Zaireeka to 1 cd loses so much depth as to be useless, I think that unless you actually have 2 players going at the same time you can't really judge how well this works - sounds on one CD very clearly pan over to the other, or echo from one to the other. Don't be discouraged until you've played both CDs together (you'll know when they're synnched).
