Autoformatting links

Would it be possible to have links autoformatting like on other boards and blogs and many things, so that

http://blah.blah.blah

turns into

<a href="http://blah.blah.blah">http://blah.blah.blah</a>

?

I reckon correcting these motivates a good 30-40% of moderation requests. It's a convenient feature even if you do know HTML.

The problem with autoformatting, as I understand it, is that it's incompatible with standard HTML. In other words, to get autoformatting of links, you'd have to give up bolds and italics.

Automatic links would also take away your ability to do things like "This page makes the argument that..."

Delphi's software gives you the choice whether or not you want to use HTML in your post. If you turn HTML off, it automatically creates links when you type a URL--but if you turn HTML on, you lose not only automatic links but line and para breaks.

To my mind, this board is giving the best of both worlds: it simplifies line breaks but allows HTML fucntionality. And really, is it so hard to cut and paste an unlinked URL into your browser's address bar?

How about some buttons next to the posting window that put in the formatting tags for you? Say you want to turn a piece of plain text into a link. First, you'd select the text, then you'd click the "Link" button. A dialogue box would appear, asking you for the URL. You hit enter and viola, linky goodness.

Don't know how implementable that would be, tho'.

Nah. The text is already autoformatted in that carriage returns are turned into line breaks. There shouldn't be any technical problem. You could distinguish between existing anchor tags and "bare" links fairly easily, unless there's some seriously weird parsing going on here. PHP has Perl-based regexps, doesn't it?

Like I say, it's not for me. But it would save an awful lot of moderator time. I don't know about you but I get loads of modify post requests for exactly this.

FTR, I have been putting in mod requests to make links link. But I'll stop if people think it is a waste of time. Gimme some feedback.

I think it's a worthwhile thing to do...
