Looking for a good Sci Fi forum

I've been wanting to get into Sci Fi for a while, but especially I want to understand the different genres inside sci fi, i'd like to get a who's who. I've been reading Gibson and Stephenson, K Dick, Aylett, and that's about it. But recently a friend of mine loaned me a copy of Locus mag and one thing I realised was how much there is out there that I don't know. Also I live in Portugal which doesn't exactly help matters. SO I was looking for some good tips, or some good web sites where I could find some author descriptions, reviews, what's hot and what's not. I'd appreciate any help from fellow Barbelithics.

It's been a few months since I last visited any of these review sites, so I can't vouch for their quality, but you should find some useful pointers on them if nothing else:

SF Site

Infinity Plus

The Alien Online

Failing that there are bound to be a few old SF-themed threads somewhere buried under the cobwebs in this forum.

Sounds like you've already got a lot of the best of recent SF, Mercury. I'd add Iain M. Banks, Jeff Noon, Ken Macleod to that list.

In terms of more 'classic' stuff, I say go for; Alfred Bester, Theodore Sturgeon, John Wyndham, Walter M. Miller, JG Ballard's earlier stuff and Christopher Priest..

Not even remotely definitive of course, but just throwing in some of the names that immediately spring to mind.

Yeah! Be a good guy and read your Ballard. "Hello America." Read it now.

Add to the list: K.W. Jeter, especially "Dr. Adder"; Douglas Adams, especially his Dirk Gently series; Rudy Rucker, especially the "Ware" series; and Kurt Vonnegut, especially anything at all.
