Magickal Brainstorming

I sometimes feel a bit stuck for inspiration on this forum - I haven't started a thread here for sometime. This is not necessarily down to the forum, part of it's me wanting to spend less time on-line. I feel part of the reason for that is I've expressed a lot of my ideas and interests here and there in various threads -critquing Chaos Magick, ideas about the body. I also think I've asked a lot of the things I was curious about with regards to other people's practice - things like the value of secrecy, feelings about cursing.

So I thought I'd put the question to people - what would you like to see discussed here? Maybe we could get a list of future topics for discussion going? What do you think is absent from magickal discourse generally? What doesn't get talked about? What out the box ideas or projects have you got?

Any comments welcome.

I'll write more when I have time, but I'd like to just say I agree with you, sometimes I have difficulty comeing up with what I want to talk about on barbelith. Not sure why really.

There's nothing wrong with the forum being fallow now and then when there's not much to discus. Quality not quntity. I'd rather read 1 post per day which people really worked on and cared rather than chat for the sake of it (and yes, I'm aware of the irony of saying so in a post)

Cool thread. OK, off the top of my head, here’s a bunch of stuff I’d like to see discussed on here but haven’t got round to starting threads about:

The main two theoretical subjects for me at the moment are probably Emergence and the Time Tree model. I know hardly anything about Emergence other than what I picked up from Grant Morrison’s brief comments at his recent ICA talk. I’m sufficiently intrigued to want to learn a bit more. The Time Tree thing, as portrayed by Vonnegut et al, almost accidentally provokes a fascinating model of magic that I think deserves a lot more discussion. I think I’ll start threads on these two subjects now as it’s tricky to summarise either of them briefly.

I’d also like to see some discussion here of Hoodoo and Rootwork. Surely I’m not the only person on Barbelith that works with these systems of sorcery? Anybody? Hoodoo work is fascinating, under-discussed and to my mind far more interesting, imaginative and potent than the sigil method. I’m not sure if it’s possible for a magical technique to become over-played and over-exposed – but if it is, then sigil magic is certainly edging in that direction. If anybody out there does hoodoo work or a related practice, then I’d be very interested in swapping notes.

Another thing I’d like to see discussed are the possibilities of web-based occult machinery. Hardly anything has been done in this field that really exploits the potential. It should be possible to use stuff like Flash animation and simple Java devices to manipulate visual symbols and noise vibration in such a way that magical effects are accomplished. I more or less have the plans for creating an on-line spirit house that lures in all of the forgotten servitors created over the web and sets them to work as cogs in a gigantic nefarious occult machine geared towards some specific end or means. There’s loads of potential for stuff like this but nobody seems to be doing it. I haven’t really got the time or web skills to wade into this sort of thing myself, but would be up for collaboration with people who are into it.

Lastly, I’d be really interested to hear more about the Charismata stuff that Set has his grounding in – if he’s willing to talk about it. The whole speaking in tongues thing, and the parallels between this religious experience and what might be considered shamanism or magic.

Fuck yeah! That sounds funktastic!

I'd like to see more people explaining what they know, as most threads are people asking questions- for example, GL could tell us all about Hoodoo (is it vodoun/voodoo by another name?)

GL could tell us all about Hoodoo (is it vodoun/voodoo by another name?)

Hoodoo is technically the folk magic of the Southern US states, it's an interesting amalgam of African conjure sorcery, European folk magic, and all sorts of other bits and peices cooked together slowly like a big pot of creole jambalaya. It's the preparation of gris-gris bag talismans, the use of roots, herbs, and other materials, and typically some element of candle magic. Whilst it is best understood as distinct from Vodou (which is specifically the Haitian religion that honours the Lwa) there are certain crossover points. For instance, Hoodoo practice can sometimes involve petitions to the Lwa or Saints in the operation of magic, and the form of American Voodoo found in New Orleans tends to utilise a heavy component of Hoodoo conjure work.

The best resource on the web for information about hoodoo and rootwork is Cat Yronwode's excellent Lucky Mojo Curio Company

GL - I'm so down for a Hoodo/Voudoun thread! Thanks for the link. Will definitely check it out.

I'd like to see a discussion of changework (which, by my ill-educated definition, is any working undertaken to alter/cease/begin certain behavior patterns) that 'Lithers are undertaking. What are y'all putting thru the fire and how hot's the flame?

'Smattero'fak, I'll step out on the precipice here and PROMISE to start this thread (if it's not already underway) next Friday. I'm coming up to the end of a looong change-working (?), and am anxious to share what I've been through. May even post snippets from my journal if the room wants a good laugh. Sorry for being mysterious about this.

Excited to see these proposals come to fruition...

Let the Magic blossom...

Gypsy Lantern: I would be so on-board with a discussion about "occult machinery," whether web-based or otherwise (I had some ideas for clockwork and interactive "installations" and the like back in college). This has been a (admittedly somewhat idle) interest of mine for a while - I'm not sure if I'd be able to get the ball rolling (other than the generic "so, what does anybody know about this??" type of post), but I would definitely participate. (I've got a journal somewhere with some interesting ideas...if I can find it...Hmmmm.)

I'd be interested in seeing a thread on energy working and psionics-- other's experiences, theories, pointers.

I'd also be interested in more threads on healing My specific interests are in reiki and SKHM, but i'm more interested in hearing about people for whom healing is a way of life.

I guess there's a fair degree of cross-over between these subjects. I'll have to think about it a bit more...

I don't know anything about psionics at all but it looks fascinating and mad. I've come across people into psionics who have these crazy helmets and boxes with dials on them. I don't really know what it's about or how it works, but it looks brilliant. Tacky and ridiculous, but fantastic at the same time. I'd be interested in finding out more about this, have you got any links?

Clockwork occult machinery! Can there be anything cooler than that. You have to tell me more about this, how did it work? what was it designed to do? Did you actually get as far as making it?

I'm not sure if I'd be able to get the ball rolling

Yeah, my main problem with this kind of thing is that I don't have the necessary time to commit to building these machines. I can dream them up and work out the details of their functionality, but I haven't really got the technical skills to follow through and build them (either web based or mechanical) - not by myself at any rate. If anyone reading this has the know-how and inclination to construct elaborate and absurd occult machinery then I'd definitely be up for some collaboration. Perhaps as a barbelith magic forum project or something?

Links: I use the Playful Psychic page for theory and excercises, and I flex my psionic muscles over at The Retropsychokenisis Project, when I'm in that sort of mood. My results have been a bit patchy, but then I'm not working as hard or as consistantly as I might.

Ummm... as regards magickal machinery: that made me think of prayer-wheels... you know, Tibetan(?) prayer-wheels. They'd have a prayer written on them and every time the wheel made a complete cycle the prayer was "said". You can turn them by hand, but if you need the prayer to be repeated continually you can make the prayer-wheel into a little water-wheel and stick it in a stream. Don't know if this helps.

A quick Google gave me the following link: The Prayer Wheel: Spiritual Technology from Tibet

Don't know if this is any help, it's a bit flakey at first glance.

This reminds me of dreams I had after reading Michael Bertiaux - weird occult machinery, I don't know what it did or how it functioned, but I had these weird dreams of odd interlocked occult energy matrixes. heh.

Mordant: The above reminds me of prayer wheels as well. Srange dreams of white painted metal sculptures - i don't know what they did but they did something anyway. A psionics thread would be cool, I'll check out those links, maybe we could compare results on some exercises?

I'm up for it, but I'm afraid I don't have the headspace to start a thread right now. However, I'd probably be able to do a Q & A thread if someone wants to start one. At least then I'll know that I'm scratching where people are itching.

I've hardly posted here due to large amounts of brain turbulence. There's tons rattling round in there, and it's yet to settle into any form that I can make use of. Give me a structure and I'll fill it, but I'm not in a threadstarty place right now.

A number of people have mentioned the Jung's individuation process, cusm particularily iirc. I wouldn't mind someone explaining that in a magickal context particularily if they gave references to Jung's writings on it.
