Cool thread. OK, off the top of my head, here’s a bunch of stuff I’d like to see discussed on here but haven’t got round to starting threads about:
The main two theoretical subjects for me at the moment are probably Emergence and the Time Tree model. I know hardly anything about Emergence other than what I picked up from Grant Morrison’s brief comments at his recent ICA talk. I’m sufficiently intrigued to want to learn a bit more. The Time Tree thing, as portrayed by Vonnegut et al, almost accidentally provokes a fascinating model of magic that I think deserves a lot more discussion. I think I’ll start threads on these two subjects now as it’s tricky to summarise either of them briefly.
I’d also like to see some discussion here of Hoodoo and Rootwork. Surely I’m not the only person on Barbelith that works with these systems of sorcery? Anybody? Hoodoo work is fascinating, under-discussed and to my mind far more interesting, imaginative and potent than the sigil method. I’m not sure if it’s possible for a magical technique to become over-played and over-exposed – but if it is, then sigil magic is certainly edging in that direction. If anybody out there does hoodoo work or a related practice, then I’d be very interested in swapping notes.
Another thing I’d like to see discussed are the possibilities of web-based occult machinery. Hardly anything has been done in this field that really exploits the potential. It should be possible to use stuff like Flash animation and simple Java devices to manipulate visual symbols and noise vibration in such a way that magical effects are accomplished. I more or less have the plans for creating an on-line spirit house that lures in all of the forgotten servitors created over the web and sets them to work as cogs in a gigantic nefarious occult machine geared towards some specific end or means. There’s loads of potential for stuff like this but nobody seems to be doing it. I haven’t really got the time or web skills to wade into this sort of thing myself, but would be up for collaboration with people who are into it.
Lastly, I’d be really interested to hear more about the Charismata stuff that Set has his grounding in – if he’s willing to talk about it. The whole speaking in tongues thing, and the parallels between this religious experience and what might be considered shamanism or magic. |
