Down With Love (2) is intended to be a reprise of the old Rock Hudson/Doris Day schtick - pastels and primary colours, and an old-fashioned 'Battle of the Sexes'. McGregor's cheery misogynist is presumable a 'nice bloke really'.
Then there's Catwoman. Halle Berry plays the lead role in a version where "Patience Price, is a scientist at a cosmetics company who transforms into Catwoman — or should we say Sex Kitten?--to take on her nefarious boss, played by Sharon Stone."
Gone is Selina Kyle's escort service and any hint of moral murk - and, curiously, any sense of trying to make the world better. "She's not Superman," Berry says. "She's not trying to save the world." Instead, like a pampered house pet, Berry says, "Catwoman is out to save herself."
So it occurs to me that when McCarthy is (actually or figuratively) out there, or when execs are scared to challenge American values because America is American values are under siege, we get movies with pastel colours and traditional, reassuring male-female dynamics. "Thelma & Louise" is out, riffs on "The Taming of the Shrew" are in. |
