Commissioner of Oaths?

Having sold our Edinburgh flat 'remotely' we must apparently now sign the contracts before a Commissioner of Oaths. While I don't wish to sound ridiculously naive, I've very little idea what this involves - and the Internet's proving somewhat general. I'm assuming it's some kind of notary who'll witness the signatures, but I'm unsure how to go about finding one.

Can anyone help?

Try Commissioner for Oaths.

Read more here, and then, more clearly, here.

This functionary is a solicitor who is, basically, a notary public.

If that first link doesn't help, maybe this one will.

You should be able to find one through a solicitor, an FA, anybody who deals with that kinda stuff. In fact, the person who drew up the contracts ought to know where to find one...

The person who drew up the contracts is in Edinburgh, and just said something like "you should be able to locate a Commissioner of Oaths in London" in his covering letter.

Thanks, both. I'll check out your links forthwith, Grant.

Oh. I thought it might be a person who issued insults.

Open your Yellow Pages to the Solicitors page and look for those that offer the service. Call around and haggle until you can get the cheapest price possible. I managed to get on for $10CDN, so like 20p really. More accurately about £4 although this came down from an initial quote of $80 and topped out at $110.
Like buying a domestic appliance, don't be scared of saying that the bloke down the road does it for cheaper.
What am I talking about, you should be uased to getting something for nothing.
