Dungarees, oddly enough.

Oh, all right. Grey suit until sixth form, black suit in sixth form. Blue shirt until, white in. Red and blue striped tie with a flash of your house colour, or (once in sixth) red monitor's tie with school crest. During summer, mid-blue blazer (hideous thing), cravat and boater, although most people stuck to the tie and forewent the boater, for obvious reasons. In very hot weather, shirtsleeve order.

I wouldn't have minded, but the girls at the school next door got a much cooler outfit and got to wear casual in the sixth. and that's before we even start on the Convent...

Caps! Runcery has reminded the Boboss that we had to wear caps at our first primary school. My mum must have loved it: "oh look, don't they look smart in their caps!"

Red and silver.

ARRRRRRGHHHHHHH

I recently took the Mamon Dear up on the uniform issue. Her response to the blazer question: "But you looked so smart."

Needless to say, we had a fight. I won.

Oh yeah, Runce sold his blazer for cash three days into term - the girl who brought it thought it was punk - she was soon re-educated.

Not sure how many Yanks have posted on this thread.

Lets have a bit of the american perspective, or that of anyone who didn't have to dress up in a funny costume.

I bet you're all jealous of those stockings.

In my pre-fab grey, blocky High School, nestled amongst the green-grey slag heaps of the concrete grey, industrial Midlands our school thoughtfully provided us with camouflage by making the uniform a uniform grey. The only note of colour was provided by a red and grey striped tie. For everyone else at least. Needing a jumper and lacking somewhat in cash my mom bought me one from a local charity shop, thus somewhat dubiously gifting me with the only jumper to have a garish red stripe around the collar in the entire school. This garnered me much gentle admiration from other boys, as I'm sure you can imagine, thus allowing the regular sight of my head being bounced off a concrete pavement to complete the whole red and grey motif.

Ah, sweet school days...

I never had uniforms. And my high school has no dress code at all. I could go to school NAKED if I wanted to. NAKED!!! I laugh at all you people with your silly uniforms and catholic school girl skirts! Bwahahahahahahaahahahahahaha!!!!!

Sorry. That was a bit outlandish.

Our school uniform was similar to Xoc's, actually, minus the short trousers. Black keks, white or pale blue shirt, red and black striped tie, Navy jumper and optional black blazer. Everyone wore a black blazer on their first day and only three or four were left by the second day.

And yes, PE in underpants if you forgot your kit. And "tutelage" in how to wash under your arms and between your legs by an over-enthusiastic games teacher (he didn't go as far as touching, but came into the showers fully clothed with us to ensure we were doing it right).

Ah, jumpers for goalposts.

To the boys: Games in netball skirts anyone? Yep, another elegant solution to the problem of the forgotten kit.

Spyder - outlandish, but utterly hysterical, especially the Peter Cookish "oops" moment.

From the bottom up, just to be original dontchaknow-

Smart black shoes, heels no more than 3 inches, preferably flat. Black tights or white socks, Blackwatch tartan kilt with pleats that fell to just above the knee (rolled up as short as possible if you were 'in', kept at ordinary length because you couldn't be arsed to sort it out if you were me. Yeah, I didn't used to care about clothes!!). White long sleeved shirt, green tie with anchor emblem and stripe in house colour across the middle (navy blue for Temple), Green jumper with anchor over left breast and 'V' shaped neck.

They've introduced blazers since, frankly the fact that we couldn't wear trousers was disgraceful enough without a load of toss about extra jackets. I was far more concerned about my cold legs.
