Oh, for fuck's sake, NO.

We really needed this guy around right now. This is an appalling loss.

Guardian obit, marred by use of the term 'political correctness'.

!!!

I don't really know what to say about this. I feel like I did when Roy Porter died (different discipline, similar eminence).

Thanks for the links, Fly.

Best obit I've seen so far: Edward Said: Against Blind Imperial Arrogance at Commondreams.org.

"No one worked harder and longer than Said to awaken Americans to the damage their government's policies had done to the prospects for peace and justice in the Middle East. It cannot be said that he succeeded in that mission, but nor can it be said that he failed. If successive presidents refused to listen to Said's wise counsel, millions of citizens were influenced directly and indirectly by his speeches, writing and tireless advocacy. To the extent that there has been a broadening of sympathy for the cause of Palestine and Palestinians in the United States in recent years -- especially among younger Americans -- it can be traced in no small measure to the work of the world-renowned scholar..."

Very sad. I didn't know much about him 'till this year, when he gave a series of four lectures in Cambridge on literary criticism and the revival of philology, as well as several seminars on the Israeli-Palestine problem. He was clearly extremely ill at the time (he had to sit down to give his last two talks), but the lectures were perfect exemplars of his customary clarity and good sense, as well as of the astounding width of his knowledge. Needless to say, he packed out the largest lecture room in the university without effort. What was most impressive was the sheer range of people who came together to hear him-entire benches of senior professors from different faculties, as well as hundreds of undergrads and grads.
As Flyboy says, this is an appalling loss.

A terrible loss, for Palestinians, Israelis, the world.

Such a decent man, a real humanitarian.
